Oyo State Sharia Court Inauguration Suspended by ehemwhy(op): 7:47pm On Dec 25, 2024
The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch), on Tuesday, announced the indefinite postponement of its plan to inaugurate a Sharia court in Oyo town.

The postponement followed widespread outcry against the planned Sharia Court inauguration earlier scheduled for January 11, 2025.

In a broadcast on Tuesday, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, acknowledged the planned Sharia court and the attendant controversy.

“About the establishment of Sharia court in Oyo town, people may try, but for us, I swore to uphold our laws and the Constitution of Nigeria.
“If their actions are within the law, fine, if not they should expect that I will insist the law must be followed,”
the governor said.

The planned Sharia court inauguration was to take place at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre in Mobolaje Area, Oyo, and was to include prominent figures such as the Basorun of Oyo Land, High Chief Yusuf Akinade Olayinka, and the Aare Musulumi of Oyo Land, Alhaji Chief Tajudeen Abdul-Hammed Kamorise.

However, the announcement sparked intense debates on social media and within the state, with critics arguing that the introduction of a Sharia court could disrupt the state’s religious harmony.

Amid growing tension, the organisers announced the indefinite postponement of the event.
In a statement signed by the Khadimul Muslimeen of Oyo Kingdom, Imam Daud Igi Ogun, the group said, “The inauguration ceremony of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch) has been suspended until further notice. Islam portrays peace.”

In an interview with The PUNCH, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Oyo State, Ahmed Raji, had clarified that the planned structure was not a Sharia court but an arbitration panel for Muslims seeking voluntary dispute resolution.

“The panel is for resolving matters between consenting Muslims and does not have judicial authority or punitive measures. No court can be established without government approval,” Raji explained.

The Oyo State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju, dismissed the initiative, describing it as unconstitutional and a threat to the state’s secular nature.

“This should not happen in Oyo State, where Christians and Muslims coexist in nearly every family. There’s no law to support this, and the government is not aware. We won’t allow anything that jeopardizes the peaceful coexistence we enjoy,” Akinyemiju stated.

The state government, through the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, emphasised its commitment to upholding the law.

“Oyo State will not permit anything illegal. The focus isn’t about wanting Sharia or not but ensuring that any structure aligns with the legal system we operate,” Olanrewaju said.

Re: Oyo State Sharia Court Inauguration Suspended by immortalcrown(m):
Three questions:

1.
Why is there so much noise or controversy about Sharia court in SW?

2.
Will the Sharia court handle cases that involve non-Muslims?

3.
I sincerely thought that Sharia court is in line with the Islamic faith. If this thought is correct and the Sharia court handles only the cases that involve only Muslims, why should a Yoruba person that willingly practises Islam in Yoruba land reject Sharia court in Yoruba land?

Awon eru Fulani.. they can't drag our region to the abyss with them.
They can relocate to the core North and become proper slaves to sharia.

A stupid sharia law to hell with it. Very nonsense law the day south west approve that rubbish that's the day I will leave Muslim religion and cross to Christianity... Thank God say I believe in humanity more than religion coz I see religion like a sim card...

Irrational decisions.
Re: Oyo State Sharia Court Inauguration Suspended by CharleyBright(m):
Make them no suspend am, they will soon install Emir of Ibadan, and carve Oyo state to be part of the North.

Introduce Sharia Courts in Oyo State, and slowly these courts (under the control of Northern Emirs) will grow to supercede normal courts in Oyo States making the State technically under the control of the Sokoto caliphate.
And the docile Yoruba Muslims will still support the introduction of Sharia Courts in Yoruba land even if it would allow Fulanis capture Oyo state through subtle religious antics.

These foreign religions have done nothing other than destruction to Nigeria..

I really don't care if they have Sharia law in place or not, provided it helps in curbing paternity fraud. So I ask again, will this Sharia law stop our non-virgins a.k.a boreholes from giving most of their husbands children from other men? If YES, then count me in. If NO, count me out
What do I even know sef aside enlightening my fellow men nationwide with the good news

Oga if you no meet your wife as a virgin, oga go for DNA test oooooooo because non-virgins a.k.a boreholes can't be trusted atall atall

Hisbah should also take it's rightful position in yoruba land and deal mercilessly with all those shepé drinkers cheesy

I full support sharia law in Oyo state and the law should be made supreme. Followed by Islam as the state religion.

Everyone of us in Oyo state say no to political shariah law in Oyo state. Anyone that needs money should go and work and if anyone thinks he can use our ancient city of Oyo to get grant from Kuwait, Qatar or Saudi Arabia such individual or group of people should wake up from their slumber.

Islam doesn't portray Peace. It's a no-brainer that virtually every islam-dominated area on earth is infested with terrorism, extremism, and the violence and suffering that go with it. The likes of Saudi are sane because they are more western oriented.

Who pledges their heart to a religion founded by an illiterate war savage who had forceful carnal relations with a child, who slaughtered people and forcefully married their young females? How is that a prophet? How?

The truth is that the famed religious ecumenicalism and tolerance of the Yoruba people are often achieved at the expense of Yoruba Muslims, who are the majority in the South West. It is they, and not their Christian brothers and sisters, who must always observe religious tolerance.

How is it within the power of The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (Oyo branch) or whatever it is they call themselves to establish a court or attempt to institutionize a new law (sharia) in the first place? The states that mockingly practice sharia in the North (mockingly because it is only for the poor), had the sharia courts/laws established by the state government and not just anybodies. If these folks dedicate time for knowledge instead of primitive extremism, of course they would've known this. They should be invited for questioning by relevant law enforcement agency and if found guilty punished within the purview of the law of the land (hefty fine will do).

They will say, it's only for two consenting Muslims, before you know, they would be forcing all religions, even people without religion to obey different archaic and troublesome Islamic laws, small small, community that hitherto, PEACEFUL, would engulf by DISHARMONY of jihadists.

Sharia Court in Oyo states..... What for..... Is it to destroy Nigeria Breweries or what?
Though, I don't have problem with sharia law if properly implemented in the North.
The sharia is an extract of the pentateuch . (The first five books of the Bible) They should tell us what it says about the herdsmen, bad governance etc and implemented in the North before they practice it elsewhere. Awon werey gbogbo

If it's your imam that you want to be settling your disagreement with your fellow Muslim then you don't need to make it public and create a special institution for that.

Are there majority of Muslims in Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun and Lagos States which are predominantly Christians? If there is any Muslim majority, it is maybe in Kwara, Oyo and Osun States, which I even doubt since many Muslims there have converted to Christians. So where do you get your statistics of Muslims being majority in Yorubaland?
Re: Oyo State Sharia Court Inauguration Suspended by OneOnland: 6:22am On Dec 26, 2024
There should just be law, particularly in the Southwest that religion should stick to religion only, and under no circumstance creep into law, commerce, banking, politics, health, core education or any other aspects of society.

Religion means the mode of worship of God, god or gods and its attendant practices and observations. Under no circumstance should any religion go out of religion to dictate to any other aspect of society, as the constitution is supreme and only supreme to dictate laws, international standards of banking have made provisions for banking, and so on and so forth.

Religion = religion, limit itself to religion only, and its activities limited to their for-worship-buildings (except in times of e.g., publicity, temporary short time-based external settings).

Two questions:

1.
Why is there so much noise or controversy about Sharia court in SW?

2.
Will the Sharia court handle cases that involve non-Muslims?
1. Because Muslims in general are deceptive. Once it kicks off, a lot of non-muslims living in muslim-dominated areas will be dragged to the same court, others will be setup. In short, we don't even want our own SW muslim population to be decapitated.

By the way, what's wrong with the Nigerian law? Why are you muslims always creating issues in the country?

2. Deborah (Sokoto) was a Christian, a non-muslim who said something that others didn't understand or like, yet she was stoned to death. A girl who was just telling her colleagues not to discuss religious issues in an academic WhatsApp group.

Islam has taught the whole world that having a large number of you people in a place is almost like having wild animals together. There cannot be peaceful coexistence in such a society.

You don't know and you're not ready to know.

So there's political Shari'ah?

The worse that can happen to Muslim is the Muslim by name who knows nothing about their religion like you

It got nothing to do with non Muslim and those who are making the loudest noise are the Muslims by names in Yorubaland, the olobeeyo musulumi.
These people can't even read Quran not to talk of knowing the meaning.

They're criminals, the adulterers and fornicators, they drink alcohol, eat human flesh and drink human blood, use human being for sacrifice. Their fear is that Shari'ah will stop them from all these sinful barbaric acts, that's why they're scared and hellbent in going against it.

To them, Shari'ah is death sentence.

They're menace to Islam

No!

To them, there is already law, constitution of the country that is comprehensive and has already dictated those. Killing other humans for whatever purpose has already been dictated by the constitution and the Nigerian Police, even Amotekun, Civil Defence, all enforce that. Since there is the constitution, it like a devil of confusion that would then seek to introduce another body of law for same purpose, creating parallel justice system, a precursor to unnecessary instability.

Why are hellbent on shariah known to have destroyed northern Nigeria, known to have destroyed Afghanistan?

How about you channel your energy to the upliftment of the Nigerian constitution rather than seeking parallelism known for destruction?
