The story of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye is not just about policy; it's a saga of ambition clashing with tradition. As she took office, the promise of a revolutionary change in women's empowerment was palpable. Yet, with every bold move, controversy lurked, ready to pounce. Could her vision outshine the shadows of her missteps? Join us as we explore this narrative, filled with unexpected turns, laughter at human folly, and the urgency of now. Comment below to discuss how we can learn from this tumultuous chapter, and whether the seeds she planted will ever bear fruit. The Dawn of Change In the heart of Nigeria, a new chapter was about to unfold in the narrative of women's empowerment. Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, with her sharp legal mind and fierce advocacy for gender equality, was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development on August 21, 2023. The promise of reform was in the air, but what would it entail? And how would it change the lives of millions? A ministry where every policy whispered the potential for revolution. But what happens when the whispers turn to shouts? The Vision - Setting Expectations Upon her appointment, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye stood before the nation, her words echoing with intent: Reform #1: Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) She spoke of a Nigeria where women would not just survive but thrive, where economic shackles would be broken. Practical Example: She proposed linking gender-based violence (GBV) prevention with economic empowerment, suggesting that financial independence could be a shield against abuse. Her vision included skill acquisition centers in all six geopolitical zones, aiming to train women in marketable skills within her first 100 days. The Groundwork - The Quiet Revolution The early days were marked by strategic planning and silent revolutions: Reform #2: Legal and Policy Framework Behind closed doors, Uju was crafting policies to enforce the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act more stringently. She advocated for mobile courts to expedite cases of GBV, a move that promised swift justice but also stirred controversy. Legal frameworks were being rewritten, but at what cost to the traditional system? The Public Face - Engaging the Masses The reforms were not just policy papers but a campaign to change societal norms: Reform #3: Public Awareness and Advocacy Uju's strategy involved employing town criers to reach the unreached rural women, urging them to form cooperative groups for empowerment. This was a nod to traditional methods meeting modern challenges. Real-life Example: At a high-profile event in Abuja, she announced a massive fund-raising drive, securing over N300 million from the private sector for women's empowerment initiatives, demonstrating her capability to think outside the box. The Controversies - Navigating Turbulent Waters But with every step forward, there were steps back into the spotlight: Reform #4: Controversial Stances \The minister's zeal sometimes overshadowed her judgment, leading to public outcry. Her suggestion at the Anambra Investment Summit of involving children in production was seen as endorsing child labor, a misstep that painted her intentions in a harsh light. Each controversy was like a storm brewing, threatening to capsize her initiatives. Would she weather these storms or be swept away? The Climax - The Battle for Legacy Despite the controversies, Uju's reforms had tangible impacts: Reform #5: Immediate Action and Legacy She fought against practices like female genital mutilation (FGM) with renewed vigor, pushing for legal action against violators in areas where the practice persisted. What would be the final verdict on her tenure? Would her legacy be one of reform or regret? Popular Cases She Handled as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development During her tenure as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye was involved in several high-profile cases that captured public attention and stirred debate. Here's an outline of some of the popular cases she handled: UNICAL Sexual Harassment Scandal: Overview: Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye was thrust into the spotlight when she commented on a sexual harassment case at the University of Calabar involving Prof. Cyril Ndifon, the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law. Her initial reaction was controversial, as she was recorded threatening to jail a female law student if the allegations were found to be false. Impact: This led to a significant backlash from gender rights activists and the public, who criticized her for potentially victim-blaming. She later issued an apology, acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue. Proposed Mass Wedding of Orphans in Niger State: Overview: Uju filed a lawsuit against the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, for planning to marry off 100 orphaned girls as part of his constituency project. She argued that this was a violation of child rights and gender equality laws. Impact: Her actions spurred a national debate on cultural practices versus legal rights, with some groups like the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) urging her to withdraw the lawsuit, citing cultural respect. This case highlighted the tension between traditional practices and modern legal standards. Threat to Sue the United Nations: Overview: Early in her term, she threatened legal action against the United Nations, accusing them of mismanaging funds intended for Nigeria. She demanded transparency and an account of these funds or an apology to Nigerians. Impact: This move was viewed as bold but also raised questions about her understanding of diplomatic immunity and international relations, given that the UN enjoys such protections. It underscored her aggressive approach to accountability but also sparked controversy regarding her diplomatic tactics. Intervention in Events Without Ministry Approval: Overview: Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye was involved in stopping an event organized by Mela-Chiyoma Pat Limited, claiming it was unauthorized by her ministry. This led to the arrest of the organizer by the Department of State Services (DSS). Impact: This case highlighted her intent to control the narrative and activities under her ministry's purview, emphasizing her commitment to oversight but also drawing criticism for overreach and the use of state security for such matters. One of the notable cases handled by Barrister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye during her tenure as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development was related to the bullying of a girl at Lead British International School in Abuja. Here's how the case unfolded: Incident Overview: A video went viral showing a girl being bullied by her peers at Lead British International School. The incident involved physical and verbal harassment, which sparked outrage across social media platforms and among parents and educators. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye's Involvement: Immediate Action: Upon becoming aware of the incident, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye personally visited the school. This visit was not only to assess the situation but also to ensure that immediate actions were taken to address the bullying. Public Stance: She used this case to highlight the broader issue of bullying in schools, advocating for stronger policies and immediate interventions to protect students. Her approach was to make an example out of this case to deter future incidents. These cases reflect Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye's tenure, marked by her direct involvement in addressing issues related to women's rights, child protection, and transparency. Each case not only showcased her determination but also her contentious approach, leading to both support for her initiatives and significant public and political backlash. ]The Fall of a Titan On October 23, 2024, the unexpected happened - Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye was sacked. The reasons? A cocktail of political maneuvering, public backlash from her controversies, and perhaps, the fear of too much change too quickly: The system, like an organism, had begun to reject the very reforms meant to heal it. Uju's departure was sudden, leaving behind a ministry in flux and a narrative of what could have been. What seeds of change did she plant that might yet grow, and what can we learn from her tumultuous tenure? Despite her dismissal, the narrative of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye's reforms continues to resonate. Her story is a testament to the complexities of bringing about change in a society deeply rooted in tradition and politics. The echoes of Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye's reforms linger, a testament to the fierce battle between progress and tradition. Her story is a mix of groundbreaking ideas and comedic missteps, leaving us with a sense of what might have been. Now, as we stand at this crossroads, the urgency to continue her work is palpable. Like or comment to pledge your part in this narrative, because the real question is, can we, should we, dare we push for that change she envisioned? The dawn might have passed, but the day is yet to fully break. DR MELCHISEDEC BANKOLE |

She was a determined minister with good policies, albeit a little bit overzealous in some cases such as the mass weddings in Niger. A more strategic approach could have been taken which would have had a delayed impact, but could have been perceived as more acceptable by the beneficiaries. She also seemed to have overlooked the political shenanigans related to her ministry and position, and this provided opportunities for rivals to make cases against her. Overall, she is a great and passionate individual. |

Very ironic. One initiates reforms that brings immediate improvements in a situation and gets sacked while the person that sacked her is carrying out reforms that are causing pains and worsening a situation but he refuses to make amends and keeps bragging senselessly... |

This cheap sponsored PR by the SACKED minister will only get her exposed! The woman is a hypocrite- using the plight of the poor to siphon money. Mrs So called integrity was so bold and daft- she was fond of threatening donors to pay money into accounts provided by her if they did not want her trouble. Those monies were supposed to be for ‘empowerment’. Those public drama were the results of the donors refusing to do her bidding! A woman that claimed to donate 7 keke to women but went off camera to demand daily payment from the women! Just 7 keke- she couldn’t leave for poor women! She is that cheap! She will use the ministry’s letterhead to request for money from people- then provide those unsuspecting people - the private account of an ngo she floated called ‘women affairs organization’- that way the people felt they were donating money to the ministry of women affairs. The president’s ears were full- he had to let her go even though he has a soft spot for her. She did nothing to achieve the ministry’s mandate just making noise up and down and grabbing whatever she could grab including food donated to the vulnerable. May Nigeria never experience a character like Uju Kennedy Ohanenye again! |

The Mela Chiyoma Pat case is still with the authorities and Uju will soon be invited for interrogation. What she did was singlehandedly sign an MOU with Miss Pat to organize a fundraising event for ‘women affairs’. Miss Pat was supposed to fund the event while Uju will use her position as minister to get the Villa banquet hall and invite dignitaries for the event. They agree a sharing formula of 75% to Uju and 25% to Pat. Based on the MOU- Pat spent funds organizing the event- Unfortunately, A few days to the event- Uju reneged on the agreement and insisted that Pat’s percentage must be reduced to 5% and also insisted that Pat pays 20 million to Uju’s son’s account before the event. When Pat refused, Uju threatened to embarass her. Pat changed venue from villa but Uju went there to disrupt it using DSS. DSS released Pat same day when they heard the true story! |
