Ijebu State Creation In Nigeria: Latest Updates And Developments by 24hrPrayer(op): 11:36pm On Dec 26, 2024
The push for the creation of Ijebu State in Nigeria has sparked intense debate, with proponents arguing that it will preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Ijebu people. However, critics raise concerns about economic sustainability, political representation, and the potential impact on Nigeria’s federal system.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The Ijebu people, part of the larger Yoruba ethnic group, have a distinct cultural identity that dates back centuries. The creation of Ijebu State is seen as a means to preserve and promote this identity, which is deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Ijebu Kingdom.

Economic Viability: A Mixed Bag

Proponents of Ijebu State argue that it will lead to economic development through localized governance and resource allocation. Ijebu land is known for its entrepreneurial spirit, and direct control over revenue and development policies could potentially unlock its economic potential. However, critics raise concerns about the economic sustainability of new states, citing the potential reliance on federal allocations.

Political Representation: A Key Driver

The agitation for Ijebu State is also driven by the desire for increased political representation and influence. With Nigeria’s federal system, the number of states impacts political power through representation in the National Assembly and resource allocation. Proponents argue that Ijebu State will provide a stronger voice for the Ijebu people in national politics.

Challenges and Opposition

Despite the momentum behind the creation of Ijebu State, significant challenges and opposition remain. The process of creating a new state requires constitutional amendments and referenda, which demand significant political consensus. Critics argue that rather than creating new states, the focus should be on developing existing structures to address local needs more effectively.

Recent Developments

A bill for the creation of Ijebu State has passed its first reading at the National Assembly, sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel. Traditional rulers and political figures are also involved in lobbying and discussions, emphasizing unity among the Ijebu and Remo people to push for statehood.

Conclusion

The creation of Ijebu State is a complex issue that requires careful consideration of cultural, economic, and political factors. While proponents argue that it will preserve and promote the Ijebu people’s cultural identity, critics raise concerns about economic sustainability and political representation. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Ijebu State will become a reality.

Extra state creation, in any part of the country, may not be a good idea for now.

State creation should be on demand as provided in the independence constitution and not done as a favor. Ijebu was a sovereign nation that fought wars in the past with Ibadan and Britain. Ijebu state should ideally comprise of Ikorodu and Epe in Lagos state while there also should be an Awori state. I guess it can only happen after the breakup of Nigeria
