Most impacts normally happen from the front during plane crash so when a plane crashes and there are just few survivors, those survivors are likely to be sitting at the tail position because the impacts won't be too brutal on them compared to those at the front and in the middle

In my own layman's mind, I'm wondering that if it's just malfunction of the landing gear, shouldn't the crash occur close to when they're about to land and as such at a reduced altitude with less casualties?

Going of the runway was his best option
After carefully analyzing the video, the front landing gear for steering was also never deployed, it was not possible to go off the runway
