Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, IPMAN, has attributed the fierce competition between Nigeria’s two refineries owned by Dangote and NNPC Limited for the recent drop in the pump price of premium motor spirit, PMS, also known as petrol.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/12/competition-between-dangote-nnpc-reason-for-petrol-price-drop-ipman/

A former Presidential candidate said "we must move from a consumption economy to a production economy" importation of petroleum products takes the boot of our imports which is a consumption but now, we no longer consume this, we produce it. But the supporters of this candidate says Nigeria is going backwards. A former president said the Port Harcourt refinery cannot be fixed. A so called investigative reporter said Dangote refinery isn't working Some people said portharcourt refinery is just blending Some other people said port harcourt refinery has stopped working. But here we are. We should sha stop deceiving ourselves with lies and propaganda sha |

Useless story. The fact is that Bola Tinubu is a useless incompetent fellow that doesn't mean well for Nigeria. An epitome of extreme failure. |

Mynd44:If the government is strategic enough, they would have used 6months to put these in place before removing subsidy and floating the naira, with this the impact wouldn't have been bitterly felt by the poor masses....this is the crux of the matter. You don't burn a whole house trying to kill rats inside the house...... imagine Nigerians dieing in stampede struggling for common rice, unheard of in the history of the country Where I am in the East, it sells for 1,100/litre |

Dangote is just desperate to frustrate other players to monopolize the sector. I hope more players go into the industry. Otherwise, he is likely going to be selling at a much cheaper price in order to get rivals out of the market. Once this is done, expect an unprecedented hike in the price of the petroleum products in the Nigerian market. |

More competition coming as soon as more refineries are built There’s a 250,000 bpd refinery under construction in Ogun State and there are several others coming up Crude Oil production will also surpass 2m bpd for the first time in a long time next year |

dre11:Dont be deceive, questioning the dynamics between NNPC and Dangote Refinery—they often appear more like power players in a tightly controlled cabal than champions of free-market principles. On the surface, the so-called "competition" between them leading to reduced pump prices might look like a win for consumers. But let's dig deeper. Both entities dominate Nigeria’s petroleum market, with limited space for truly independent players. The fact that the pricing decisions of these two entities directly dictate the market reveals a lack of healthy competition. The prices are dropping not because of an open, efficient market but due to a price war between two giants with monopoly-like control over supply. Additionally, when you consider how both entities benefit from government favoritism—Dangote Refinery with policy incentives and NNPC entrenched as the national oil giant—it becomes clear this is less about genuine economic progress and more about sustaining a duopoly. Independent marketers, for all their cheerleading, still depend on these behemoths to access products, and their "better turnover" is at the mercy of whatever pricing strategy Dangote and NNPC decide suits them. Finally, there's the FX issue. Claims about reducing forex pressures with local refining capacity sound nice, but what about the opaque operations, subsidies, and other market distortions that remain unresolved? It feels like consumers are stuck in a chess game where the kings and queens always win, and everyone else just gets shuffled around. |
