The 23 km may seem a long distance, but to a rural boy that's just a walking distance. Besides, he wouldn't have walked all that distance in one day - he probably got lost after a few kilometres and kept wandering and couldn't find his way back home.

Some of these things sometimes defies logic and explanation.
Remember the case of a little boy and his even younger sibling that got lost in the Amazon jungle last year or thereabout for about 23days or so.
How those 2 kids survived that number of days in the Amazon with all sorts of wild creatures including the mighty Anaconda,will still remain a mystery till perhaps humans learn how to converse with animals one day.
