Is their money coming directly from Abuja ? Or their money goes to state, then local government creates bank account then state pays it to the local government ? If its the latter, forget about the money. |

During the period that local governments were autonomous, we had good roads at local levels, but that narrative changed all of a sudden. Thank God a new life is about to be given to governance at local levels. They are closer to the people and they see the people’s need first. |

zero8zero:the buzz around local government autonomy—everywhere you look, it’s like these LG chairmen have just hit the jackpot! The excitement is almost infectious, but let’s pump the brakes for a second. It’s one thing to get direct allocations from FAAC; it’s another to manage those funds transparently and effectively. These LG chairmen need to understand one critical fact: there’s no immunity for them. None. Zero. If they think autonomy is a free pass to channel funds into private pockets, EFCC will be more than happy to remind them of the consequences. Jail terms are very real, and Nigerians are watching closely this time. Yes, it’s a great step forward—grassroots development should be driven by those closest to the people. But autonomy isn’t a license to get drunk on newfound financial power. If anything, it’s a test of integrity. They’ve been clamoring for this opportunity, now it’s their time to prove they’re capable of managing public resources responsibly. This excitement shouldn’t translate to extravagance or mismanagement. Roads need to be built, schools renovated, primary health care centers equipped, and local businesses supported. Anything outside this—and we know how creative some can get with inflating contracts or awarding them to ghost companies—will land them in hot water. So, while we celebrate this bold step towards true federalism, let’s also keep the spotlight on accountability. The EFCC is sharpening its teeth, and erring chairmen will have their day to explain where the money went. Hopefully, they realize this autonomy isn’t just an opportunity; it’s a heavy responsibility. |

TimeManager:That's very good, if they don't enjoy immunity then EFCC should mess them up big time. |

Very good development. If we the LGA chairman and council men work as they should we will all see a change in all the local government areas and won't be asking what is the governor or president doing but what is the chairman doing. Any issues will be localised, a problem in Anambra would not be a national problem but that of it's governor and chairman. In as much as I've not been a tinbubu fan, there few things he has done that I appreciate because he atleast has the balls to do them. He commands that respect and that's what we need in this country. We should all be focused on our states and local governments more from this month. |

Largely, the political class in the 2nd tier of government are less patriotic as they're expected to have been. |

Don't depend on EFCC to police this against corruption. Let each LGA have a citizens watch commission that independently acts as unofficial oversight to LGA chairs. Since they are all there together, it's easier to quickly see who buy new car for him side chic |
