Criticism has erupted over the high tuition fees at Charterhouse Lagos, a British school that commenced operations in September 2024. Serving students from Year 1 to Year 6, the school has been at the center of a heated discussion about the affordability of quality education in Nigeria.

A social media video recently described Charterhouse as “the most expensive school in Lagos” and claimed its fees, including accommodation, are just below N30 million annually. Despite this, many Nigerians voiced frustration, saying the costs remain unattainable for most families.

Critics argued that such fees perpetuate inequality. “Education shouldn’t be a privilege for the wealthy. N42 million per year is outrageous,” one social media user said. Others speculated the school primarily targets expatriate families who can afford the steep charges.

Supporters defended the institution, citing its world-class facilities, unique learning environment, and networking benefits. Charterhouse’s website indicates tuition fees range from N16.1 million to N24 million, with boarding costs adding significantly to the total.

John Todd, Founding Head of the school, addressed the criticism, explaining, “Our fees stand at N26 million annually. We have never charged N42 million.”

And this school has students.
Wow.
I would rather fly the kid overseas to pay that fees, it's just too much, paying such a fee here in Nigeria

It's too expensive...that's about 15k dollars a Yr for secondary school.... even in USA, it will b too expensive... and Nigeria is a poor nation .. our average income is a disaster ... so if u have 2 kids , na 50m Yr... 300m in 6 yrs and it will definitely increase b4 the 6 yrs is over ... I would rather send them to school of 3m for both of them per annum on the same island ... that's roughly 20m in 6 yrs .. and then invest 200m for both of them until they get to age 30 ... Will also save 80m for myself .... going to 25m school will not guarantee success

They may even get more than enough applications for admission. The school fees is just 15k in dollars. In lagos alone there are countless individuals who can afford it - Nigerians and expatriates like biz people and diplomats. Also, let's not forget that there's lots of Nigerians in diaspora who send their children back home to attend boarding schools like this.

What if the rich start screaming out that most of your schools are very cheap and obviously can't provide good education and needs to be closed

People that can't afford it will be the one talking about it.

Some of you need to live on the island to see how people there make and use money. N30m is very fair price for some.

Why are poor people so problematic?
Did anyone put a gun to your head that you must attend the school? The owner/s of the school must have invested heavily in that school (modern and well designed facility, security, professionally trained personnel etc)

Why don't you use the he same energy to drag politicians, and pastors that use public funds to buy luxury private jets, flashy cars, security escorts, fund their expensive lifestyles.

Firstly, it's thread not trend.

Secondly, what the person you quoted commented is probably the most sensible comment on this thread. His kids, if they're smart enough, would thank him for his wisdom. School is not a prerequisite for success, in the same way that a more expensive school is not the a prerequisite for more success.

A fool and his money will quickly part ways.... with the one I have made .....anyone can easily understand how I will manage my money of I'm a billionaire... only people with inferiority complex think they have to throw stupid cash to feel like they belong ....

I'd rather save 15k dollars a year and give it to him when he starts life.

Except he wants to be a politician and thief.

As a normal worker in Nigeria in all your years of life you won't make 15k x 6 years that's 90k dollars.

So why not start normal then help them begin love with that ammount

THE SCHOOL DIDN'T FORCE ANYONE TO BRING HIS /HER WARD TO THE SCHOOL....... IF NO ONE ATTENDS THE SCHOOL WITH IT'S HIGH FEES, THEN THEY WILL BE FORCED TO SHUT IT DOWN OR BRING DOWN THE FEES......

Rich men (regardless of their source of wealth) from all over west Africa who don't want their kids to leave their sight are the ones who enrol their children in this school. I hear it's pretty packed. They are not looking for a broke ass like me and it's okay. I'm not angry.

They will pay white teachers in USD and pay Nigerians there in Naira and in stipend. They might be paying Nigerian teachers there 500k max if even reach. The more you look the less you see,

If they intend to pay teachers in naira(500k) as you said that's very criminal of them to do that.
