Please what is happening in our markets these days? Food items are becoming unbearable, and sometimes unavailable. Even, common vegetables are so expensive.

Vegetable - 500 for few strands

Onion bulb- 300/500 each

Pepper

Tomatoes

Rice

Beans

Ijebu Garri

Egg

Please what is happening, is there a famine we don't know about or what?

Foods are not scarce it’s just market reality.

If you check the rate of fuel and transport and cost of other things. You have no choice than to factor them into your product.

Many other products have been boycotted while companies and individuals are suffering low sales. Only essentials items are making sales despite hike in price because people have no choice

The woman cultivating the vegetable will buy seasoning cubes, salt, crayfish, fish garri, etc for her food.
The cost is high because one man made a 3-Word-Sentence: SUBSIDY IS GONE. Since that day, Nigeria was thrown into chaos.

To worsen matters, there's no investment in agriculture as at present. With their system of "Almajiri" citizens, and palliative program, the food produced in 2024 has been mobbed up and the silos as empty.

People should brave up and get ready to face reality.

To me, i will say is bad policies and middle-men taking advantages of it too. I dont really know the particular policy.

High cost of production with little to no subsidy from the government. From ever increasing prices of seeds to fertilisers to herbucides as well as hiring of the tractors and labour.
Number two which can also be called major factor is insecurity in the north. Many farmers have been murdered. In some instances, the whole family was wiped out right on the farms by bandits. Some farmers and their family were kidnapped and still in captivity. Many farmers are displaced and can't farm anymore.
And down in the south, we don't do commercial, mechanised arable crop farming. We look down on farmers, even southern govs wouldn't invest in agriculture or encourage and support the residents to embrace commercial and mechanised farming. We rely on the northern farmers

Agriculture is the best thing to invest in now. If you have money, go into agrobusiness. That's a bigger cash cow than oil and gas.

It's cheaper for other countries to buy Nigerian Food as their currencies are stronger

Inflation is also high in developed countries such as Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Australia. It is not limited to Nigeria; inflation is a global issue.

Come to Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom....a common man in these countries is asking the same sane questions you are about onions. If you doubt me, ask anyone you know in these three developed countries....the only difference is that these countries have more employment and security infrastructure than Nigeria.

There are poverty-stricken and hungry people in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Farmers are being attacked and killed on their farms in various parts of the country, especially the Middle Belt, and how can anyone still wonder why there is a scarcity of food or high price of it ?! The supply is simply not enough! The bulk of our food supply in Nigeria comes from the Middle Belt region, but unfortunately, Fulani herdsmen have been attacking this region relentlessly for some years now, and the government seems unable to stop the attacks. While there is high inflation, occasioned by high energy costs - pms ,diesel,etc - and the devaluation of the Naira, the primary reason for food scarcity or high cost in Nigeria is the relentless attacks on the farmers.

It is not scarce. It is just expensive.
Blame weather and bandits.
