Insurgency: Zulum To Subsidise Petrol At ₦‎600/litre For Farmers by Bobloco(op): 5:52am On Jan 05, 2025
Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced that the state government will subsidise the cost of petrol to farmers in communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency.

Zulum announced the subsidy on Friday evening in Bama town when he flagged off the distribution of farm inputs to over 5,000 farmers hitherto displaced by Boko Haram insurgents.

According to the governor, a litre of petrol sold between N1,000 and N1,200 in Maiduguri will be subsidised to the farmers for N600.

This is aimed at alleviating the financial burdens faced by farmers in communities that have suffered economic and infrastructural destruction due to years of conflict.
Zulum emphasised that a similar initiative implemented in Damasak, Mobar Local Government Area, last year had significantly increased food production and improved livelihoods.

“One of the major challenges that are facing the farming communities here as regards irrigation farming is the increasing cost of fuel. As a result, I want to announce to the general public that government will procure petroleum products and sell to the farmers at a subsidised rate. A litre of petrol is being sold in Maiduguri at the cost of about N1,200 but in’shAllah, henceforth for irrigation farmers, this season, a litre of petrol will be sold at the rate of N600.

“The Commissioner for Agriculture will work with the Brigade Commander to ensure the delivery of the petroleum products to farmers in Bama town as soon as possible,” he said.

In addition to the petrol subsidy, Zulum distributed farm inputs, including 2000 bags of blended NPK fertiliser, 1000 units of water pumps, and 620 units of gasoline pumps.

Other materials include 380 units of solar water pumps, 1000 units of sprayers, 800 rolls of 2-inch flexible hose, and 1000 litres of pesticides and seeds, among other items.

According to him, his administration has constructed over 100 tube wells for use by irrigation farmers while also announcing the approval for the construction of an additional 250.

The governor also visited Darajama and Goniri villages under Bama Local Government to assess the ongoing reconstruction work.

Zulum expressed satisfaction with the quality of the project but also reiterated that his administration would not allow anyone to sabotage its resettlement drive.
The governor expressed gratitude to the federal government for the tremendous support of his administration’s reconstruction and resettlement of communities affected by insurgency

People from non affected area will be going there to get their fuel, just as people used to come from Benin Republic to get fuel in Nigeria.

The government should look for a more effective means of reaching the affected people.

Nice move but this farmers are at a great risk of being attacked by herdsmen, rebels groups, bandits and terrorists. In fact living in borno is like going to bed with a fire burning on your roof, it can escalate at any moment and you get burnt by the embers

Nigerians are just too pathetic

Governor Zulum has empathy for his people as shown throughout 2024.

God bless Borno state

God bless Nigeria

One love

Happy first Sunday of the year family 🥰

another story of Northern Nigeria receiving preferential subsidies while development in the region somehow remains stagnant. Governor Zulum’s efforts to subsidize petrol and distribute farm inputs to farmers affected by Boko Haram insurgency are commendable in the immediate sense, but they shine a glaring spotlight on the deeper systemic inequalities.

Meanwhile, down south, where people are often left to fend for themselves, subsidies like these are nonexistent or riddled with bureaucratic bottlenecks. Southern farmers and communities dealing with their own challenges rarely see this level of direct intervention. Yet, the North continues to lag in basic development indices despite decades of such targeted support.

It’s the same old pattern: massive resources pumped into the region, but little to show for it in terms of sustainable progress. This cycle keeps the North dependent, while the South hustles its way to growth with minimal federal support. It's frustrating because it feels like the scales are always tipped, yet the outcomes remain lopsided. The question is: when will this imbalance end, and when will the North turn these opportunities into real development?

How would you know that with certainty?

Can you share your "well thought out" reason apart from the fact that non-farmers MAY abuse the system?

It is not sustainable my friend. The governor is not thinking right perhaps there are other ulterior motives for this that he is not projecting to thr public.

Prof Zulum is a genuinely kind hearted and trailblazer in public governance. I personally appreciate his kindness for humanity. He could have snubbed the need to assist the farming communities in Borno, diverted the funds and heaven will not fall.

- sustainability: Not all solutions have to be long term and many a time, some solutions are in the form of an intervention to pull a lever that achieves a goal. so short-term solutions can also be good solutions.

- Ulterior motives: this is so far a baseless accusation as you have not provided any evidence of anything ulterior or sinister. It is just an accusation and an unfounded one.

But you can clarify further...
