I am totally in support of Hollywood making movies about my black community but definitely not about exploiting the black community by creating a story about black women in which 70% of it is fantasy making it seem like black people can't tell a story about their exploits without it being almost farcical

I typically agree with the Drinker’s reviews, so I’d given this movie a pass. However, the wife made me watch it last night, and I’m glad she did. I disagree with his overall analysis.

After watching the movie, I researched the 6888 and was surprised by what I read (try this, this and this). First surprise: I consider myself a WW2 buff, but until I saw his review and then the movie, I had not heard of this unit. It says a lot about the discrimination they went through. Kinda like the Indian units that fought with distinction in places like El Alamein and Monte Cassino, and have effectively been written out of the history of those battles, or the RWAFF who were instrumental in getting the Italians out of Abyssinia and holding the Japanese in Burma, were denied their pay, and have been forgotten. Or is it the Senegalese soldiers who, after taking part in the liberation of France, were not given the honour of marching into Paris alongside their white comrades and then were massacred in Thiaroye when they demanded their owed pay (read about it here and here).

From my point of view, this is not a war movie; it’s a movie about racial discrimination that happens to be set in World War 2, and we should not forget the kinds of walls that were put up against African Americans all through their history in a systematic manner.

I agree with the Drinker’s general thrust against “the message”. It irritates me a lot as well, but we can’t and should not prevent historically disenfranchised minorities from telling their stories. This movie was written and directed by an African American, so it really does not fall under a top-down studio order; it just so happens to have come out at a time when we have plenty of such.

Probably you don't get what I'm implying. Extensive knowledge doesn't mean skimming through pages brother - it's something I actually studied for a project for a full year in college🤷🏾‍♂️ and I can tell you the articles you sent are basic compared to the the study I've done.
I don't want to write a whole article to argue with you but I'll say this tho- 'morale boosting' letters is extremely minute compared to actual war morale boost. In 1941 when the British were pretty losing - some major officials decided to even stop letters because it made the soldiers miss home and some of them even hurt themselves so they could go back 🤷🏾‍♂️.
I'm not saying they didn't do their jobs well - they truly did and perfectly well but if they had not done their jobs - the war would have still been won.
The thing with Hollywood is they only market what people would like to watch and increase their HRT score. There're a lot of black stories that have not been touched on at all esp in WW2 but they won't do it because it's not marketable and because it has no inkling to slavery or even racism but just courage and loyalty to the United States.
Racism was a big deal at that time- definitely. All I am saying is what they did is not enough to make a full ass movie. The only reason they did is because they were finding movies they could make about black women in WW2 which is exploiting our community for money- yet again

I think you get my point already and we can totally disagree unlike some other sperm-infected brained Nairalander here. You believe the 6888th battalion story should be highlighted and I totally still believe the Netflix story overbloated their achievements in the WW2 just because of their race.
Just three months ago I wrote a letter to the Writers Guild of Hollywood highlighting the stories that haven't been told or even discussed previously about Black and Hispanics in WW2, the Vietnamese War and the Iraqi War which would make of great stories.
The 6888 battalion did their part in rat infested warehouses and bad working conditions and definitely should be appreciated but not with a movie and a movie that added 70% of fantasy to their exploits - I consider it a shame to my black community

I don't know how these guys churn out this rad numbers for film watch in a year but it's outrageous. Makes me feel grossly underperforming. I watched a meagre 62 movies in 2024. 😭😭

There's a probability tho that they solely or only watch movies instead of mixing it with TV shows.

If I combine my TV series watch hours with films I watched last year then I should at least be around 180 films watched since I watched about 43+ TV shows last year.

It's centred on a serial killér who runs amok across 3 decades in a state, k!lling whole families and leaving his signature letter. The FBI is in a race of time to prevent another family hom!cide, with Lee Harker a young federal agent who happens to have escaped a similar fate years ago, tasked to catch the infamous Longlegs.

I loved the cinematography and use of lighting to create dread and it's narrative approach to storytelling.

It's storytelling was really good and amongst the best the horror genre had to offer in 2024 but the "scariest horror film" and Best title will probably go to Smile 2 or Oddity.
