Looking4Trouble: Ojuntana:Not like that o. I'm not a commercial poultry farmer, so I'm not holding brief for them. But I'm always raising few for consumption every time. Four weeks old broiler is between 4k and 4.5k naira. Day old broiler is over 1k. Cheapest bag of feed (topfeed) is now above 25k from 8k. You would spend over 20k to raise a very big broiler because you have to feed them properly. Poultry farming is not profitable and that's why many farmers are closing down and that's why we're now constantly having shortage of eggs |

Ishilove:How much do you think they should sell? By how many % do you think chicken feed have increased, by how much do you think salaries of people raising the birds should increase, the energy they use, the medication for birds and other costs, can you please show farmers where they can get those at the same price they got it before. |

Dyke15:If you are into business you won't be saying this. Do you think the farmers just decided to fix ridiculous price on the chickens. The high cost of feeds and medication coupled with labour cost is what is used to determine the price. |

FreeStuffsNG:They can't sell far below the cost of production. Many of them would even prefer to sell at no profit or with a slight loss than to continue spending money to feed them after festive period because that's how you cut your loss quickly. But the problem is that many consumers don't even have money to buy it even if the farmers want to sell at production cost. Manufacturers are shutting down production because of high cost that leaves no room for profits, farmers are not exempted as governments are not subsidising their operation. |

We have this culture of increasing prices arbitrarily in this country in the name of inflation, especially when we think it's a season when there'll be a surge in demand. We forget easily that, no matter the surge in demand, if it's overpriced, it's only a matter of time, the consumers will look for an easy way out by seeking an alternative or doing away with that particular commodity altogether. We should learn to invest wisely and not just follow the crowd blindly. Personally, I would not buy a chicken for 25/30k, at least, not in 2025! They should just discount their prices and sell off their stocks to avoid further costs, count their losses and move on. Alternatively, They can eat them with their families, it is allowed. Next time, they will check their estimated cost of production and the potential reasonable selling price before investing in such. They have learned their lessons I believe. They can only sell at premium price when the supply is higher than demand! Peace! |

maasoap:It still goes to the law of demand. If no one demands it, you will reduce price to avoid running at a total loss, In economics, outside demand and supply we also have profit and loss. Like I said Nigeria does not follow basic economics. Feedbis expensive because it is in high demand. I trained over 12 birds this Xmas period with only 2 casualties. AFTER STARTER FEED I fed them corn, bread ordnairy garri, Eba, water leaf, maggot etc etc and my family enjoyed the birds very very well. I trained broilers, layers and noilers I still have 3 left. People should try noiler When my birds were sick, I gave them garlic, ginger, bitterleaf and aloe Vera. |

Dyke15:Na your leaders dey breed the chicken? Na your leaders dey produce feed for poultry animals abi? Na Tinubu cause am.... Na dollar exchange rate cause am? The government and Nigerian leaders have their own failures and misbehaviors but the price of food stuff is not their fault. Instead of you to blame the poultry farmers, livestock farmers, crop farmers and feed manufacturers for their greed and super profit mentality. |

Dyke15:Bro look like you never raise any chicken before, from last year December I dey raise my own local turkey in cage, after 3 month I have to spend 30k on feed for them because there is no grass around for them to feed on, they are just 6 turkey till this last December now multiply 30k times 9 thats around 270k, now divide it by 6 . That means I spend like 50+ to raise one turkey, now do you expect a farmer to spend such amount on a turkey for 12 month and only put 10k as gain ? |

There is also an impact of most homes rearing the chicken for the festive season which result to high available which impacted on the demand. Also the high cost of production drive most people to produces rather than to buy, it rather cost effective to rear than to buy. |

Basic economics asserts that when prices rice, especially for price elastic goods and services, demands fall ceteris paribus. They will learn to get their price right next time.
