Has Nigeria Progressed Under Tinubu's Presidency ? By Soibi Versatile Good Day Nigerians and happy new year to you all. I wish the very best for this country in this 2025 and my prayer is that the country will move forward than it did the previous year. Since the arrival of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration there has been mixed reviews among Nigerians. Some have spoken about the new government in the positive light of taking Nigeria forward, others have given them a thumbs down and slammed the government for a declining state of governance. But how has Nigeria fared since President Tinubu came on board? May 29th 2023 saw President Tinubu give his inauguration speech and like most Nigerians I was eager to hear something that will spark in me an iota of hope after 8 years of Buhari's inept leadership that took the nation steps backwards. Instead there was the announcement of the removal of fuel subsidy. The removal of fuel subsidy is not what really got me worked up about Tinubu's plans for the country but that he did so without adequate compensatory measures in place to cushion the effects of its removal. Petrol being the most significant export in the country has a very strong effect on prices of other commodities as it decides the inflation rate of goods and services. While it is commendable that the President showed courage to take out fuel subsidy which was robbing the federal government of more funds to develop the country. Subsidy was the only way the common man could benefit in the country as it ensured that food prices and other commodities did not soar beyond affordability. Giving the fraudulent nature of our political leaders in Nigeria it is apt to say that removing subsidy without placing certain measures in check to enhance local productivity, affordable transportation and tackle corruption and diversion of funds only worsens the situation for the common man as it makes funds available in greater quantity for those who have plundered the nation and kept it in its current state. On the progress of the nation since President Tinubu took over power it has been a declining path, a case of from frying pan to fire as things have gotten worse. The only exception in Tinubu's government is the security situation in the country that has slightly improved. I would say slightly because the issue of terrorism and violence in the north has lessened compared to when President Muhammadu Buhari was in power as Bokoharam and other cells unleashed mayhem in the north and made the roads unsafe. The issue of kidnapping is still a source of concern for everyone as there was a report from a foreign agency telling that Nigerians spent over one trillion in ransom to kidnappers. A country where citizens spend a trillion paying ransom to kidnappers is a very unsafe country. The National security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu needs time to tackle the security issues and may be a little of credit for the marginal improvement we have seen so far. The food situation in the country is very worrisome as the common " Mama put "which used to go for N300 or N400 is now N1000 and N1500. The issue of food stuffs is nothing to celebrate about as even the common onions now goes for N400. A Tuber of yam which used to be N2000 is now N7000 to N8000 and a bag of rice is now over N100000. Prices of vegetables like carrot, watermelon have also soared by 40%. Fruits have also recorded a higher cost and most Nigerians have lessened their consumption of fruits so far. During the Christmas celebration a full chicken was sold for about N18000, it used to N7000 as at May 2023. The issue of housing and accomodations is a very worrisome one as house rents have increased by 40% in most parts of the country with a two bedroom in a middle class settlement now N800k. The cost of building houses is now more expensive given the increments in prices of cement bag which used to go for N1500 is now N4000 or more. Building materials like window blinds, sand, gravel and chippings have also gone higher by 150% in some cases making it difficult for the average Nigerian to have his own house. During the rule of PDP for 16 years it was possible for the average civil servant to purchase a land and build his own house according to his own standard but it is not the same anymore. Businesses have been garroted by the low purchasing power of Nigerians and many companies have folded up and left the country for greener pastures. The economy of the country has been terrifying as loan interest by the central bank is now extremely high at 9% and small shops have a very low turnout of customers. Businesses which run on diesel have had to increase price of commodities inorder to meet up with the harsh realities. Powering generators now cost a lot more and even the electricity tariff now costs more with the band A now at N1000 for a mere four units. Houses now struggle to recharge their electricity meters as the yearly cost is now equivalent to a house rent price for a three bedroom flat. Transportation is now very expensive as travellers this Christmas moving from Abuja to Port Harcourt paid N60000 for fare and even the transportation within the state which Nigerians pay to work has increased by 300% The exchange rate which was left at N700 to the dollar by the Buhari regime is now N1700 to the dollar. Businesses that import have been left in tatters as they are now double-minded because of the low purchases being recorded. The minimum wage which was increased from N30000-N70000 is still short of what Nigerians can cope with as the basic cost of everything has gone up from it's previous price by 4 making it still difficult for Nigerians to live in prosperity. Despite the above reasons some Nigerians have still had the effontory to claim that the Nation was making progress and that people were now begining to feel the positive impact of Tinubu's blueprint. The truth remains that the Nation has gotten worse and Nigeria is not heading to any promise land under Tinubu. Only the Yorubas believe so and it is down to the fact that they are blinded greatly by ethic sentiments to call a spade, a spade. Soibi Versatile is Daily Memoirs Chief Writer. |
