They should eat their chickens to reduce their losses na. But this thing affected me that year. Once you don't sell off your stock before the new year you are on your own. If you keep feeding them you are adding to their cost so you just have to dispose them off soonest and cut losses

She called ,if your story is true ,just to cut her losses ..she might not be involving herself in the business again , going forward .

I still have 4 from the ones I raised for personal consumption...feed is the issue
I don't have to prove my story is true or not. I bought chicken from her in Nov for 13k suddenly I called in Dec 2nd week and the chicken is now 20k with a condition that from 20th it will be 25k. Tell me how much was added to feed in less than a month that will resort in 50% increase if not the greed to cash out during Xmas season. The inflation prob in
this country is 80% on retail trader. If a retail
trader goes to the market and 50 naira is added to carton of indomie they will come back and add that 50 naira on each pack of indomie and tell u it's expensive in the market.

Is that.not a very big lost?
The problem starts with the feed producers or should I say sellers.

Now that the chicken sellers have lost, let's see who will patronize their useless feeds.

You don't need feed.
Formulate your own feed
With the current price of maize per kg? Do you know how much the ingredients cost now? A bag of wheat bran now goes for 16,500. Even soya bean meal (SBM) now goes for 1200 per kg.

Unless there are other local materials that can serve as cheaper alternatives that can be found, feed formulation is not really that cheaper an alternative.

If no be greed, So tell me how the size of chicken I bought in November for 10k now sell for 25k-30k in December did the farmer start the rearing November to December
The size of chicken you bought in November was probably sold at N800 per day old chick. The chickens you saw in December were bought at N1,750 per day old chick, with attendant increase in cost of feed.

- There will be mortalities. A lot of mortalities because this is the heat period and chickens do not do well in hot weather.
- Not all will grow at the same rate (genetics, survival of the fittest, food competition, etc). So you may buy 100 chickens and only 70 will get to table size.

Some of you know nothing about a business and you just open your mouths and be yarning rubbish. If you think it is greed, why not open your own poultry business and see how it goes.

Formulate your own feed
The difference in cost will still be little as the ingredients you're going mix together are costly too. And God forbids if you don't it right, that will only means more loss

Birds just need to eat constantly.Anything

Waterleaves provides their source of nutrients.

Two of my birds died of Obesity.

We found it difficult to crack the bones of our birds.

Am not a poultry farmer, just someone who is interested in eating healthy, cause am on the plus side.

It still goes to the law of demand.

If no one demands it, you will reduce price to avoid running at a total loss,

In economics, outside demand and supply we also have profit and loss.
If you reduce the price to equal or below the production cost, you're still going out of the business. Simple as ABC.
Let me tell you: if a poultry farmer says a particular broiler is 25k, I assure you that he spent nothing less than 22k on that chicken. They don't add much profit to it because the expenses is already high.

Like I said Nigeria does not follow basic economics.

Feed is expensive because it is in high demand.
Lol. You have to be an economist by only the theory.
Feed is expensive because their ingredients are also expensive. Cost of doing business in Nigeria has taken a turn for the worst since around February 2024.

I trained over 12 birds this Xmas period with only 2 casualties. AFTER STARTER FEED
I fed them corn, bread ordnairy garri, Eba, water leaf, maggot etc etc and my family enjoyed the birds very very well.
I trained broilers, layers and noilers

I still have 3 left.

People should try noiler

When my birds were sick, I gave them garlic, ginger, bitterleaf and aloe Vera.
So, every commercial poultry farmer should also start looking for "corn, bread ordnairy garri, Eba, water leaf, maggot etc", right? grin grin

Your casualties is high BTW. 120 birds means 20 casualties

Birds in PH were around 13k to 15k ending November, I wonder what magic made it enter 30k, Xmas period, that was bad business calculations.

Nope they should start improvising what can give them better returns

I wonder where you got the basis of your ratio from, I said they died because of Obesity.
Bottom line.

Greedy farmers. Some farmers were selling a chicken for as high as 30k. They keep lying on the high cost of feeds.

I disagree sir

I bought 4pcs of 6 weeks old cockerel for consumption and rear them for 6months before I slaughter the first one and I have spent over 60k naira which means each chicken consume over 15k of feeds before I even slaughter one out of it

In total i spent over 70k on feed before I ate all

Imagine spending over 70k on just 4pcs of chicken

Mind you, I bought them at 6 weeks and not as a day which means if rear from a day old, I need to vaccinate them and give them some drugs

It's not funny rearing chicken these days and brolier eat lots of feeds
That's a tight investment situation there.

... As People shunned chicken during Christmas and new year celebrations
In this interview, the Director General, DG, Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN, Dr Onallo Akpa, narrates the losses incurred by poultry farmers during Christmas and New Year celebrations as many Nigerians snubbed chicken purchases for other commodities based on their purchasing power: Excerpts:

How was the production of chicken ahead of the festivities like?
The preparations of poultry farmers for the Christmas and New Year festivities were highly expectant as, traditionally, there was the belief that Christmas and New Year seasons are periods that every family no matter how poor will be able to afford chicken for the festivals.

Hence, there were heavy investments in broiler production, especially the backyard small-scale poultry producers across the country.

Despite the high cost of Day Old Chicks, DOCs, orchestrated by demands for production for Christmas and the abnormally high cost of poultry feeds, poultry farmers stocked while expecting to sell at Christmas and New Year. There was virtually no family involved in poultry production that never stocked broilers for Christmas – with the expectations that whatever might be the reasons, there will be sales.

What were the challenges poultry farmers encountered during this period?
Sales and patronage at Christmas and New Year..in contrast to the expectations of most poultry farmers, all they produced could not be sold. Surprisingly, over 50 per cent of broilers produced for sale at Christmas could not be sold because of the low purchasing power of the people.

Families are striving to see how they can get any kind of food for their families, and therefore, the luxury of poultry meat as protein was not a consideration during Christmas and New Year. Poultry farmers who thought of making little profit at Christmas and New Year, are, at the moment, lamenting the losses they incurred.

A random survey of our communities at the moment reveals the presence of unsold broilers. The problems of poultry farmers are compounded as they cannot continue to feed the birds as that will amount to additional cost of production in the absence of patronage.

What’s the effect of poor patronage on the poultry industry?
The resultant effect of the development is that the livelihoods of the family who have had their sustenance on small family poultry production is being eroded while farmers are losing confidence in the business, leading to the closure of poultry farms all over the country. The challenge at the moment is that of the extremely high cost of production and induced purchasing power of the people.

What is the way forward in 2025?

Hope is not lost if the economy can be rejigged to look at the critical sectors of the agricultural economy of which the poultry sector is the low-hanging fruit with over 25 million Nigerians directly and indirectly involved in employment provision. More critical is the urgent need for the government to look at the nutrition and food security of the nation of which poultry plays a critical role.
