The Nigeria Customs Service has said that it received 573,519 applications in the just-concluded 2024/2025 recruitment exercise, barely a week after the portal was opened.


DAILY POST reports that about a week ago, the Minister of Finance, Mr. Olawale Edun, announced that the recruitment of 3,927 officers has been approved for the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS.

In an update on Tuesday, spokesperson to Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, noted that 573,519 applicants applied for 3,927 vacant positions.

“I want to break down the number of people that applied. We have two categories of officers: we have the support staff that are professionals, and we have the general duty.

“For the general duty, we have three categories of ranks. For the general duty under the superintendent cadre, we have 249,218,000 candidates that applied.

“Under the superintendent cadre support staff cadre, we have 27,722,000 with HNDs and university degrees.

“For the inspector cadres, those expected to apply with their National Certificate for Education (NCE) or National Diploma, we have 115,634 applying for the general duty, and for support staff, we have 12,952.

“As for the customs assistants, these are those who are supposed to come in with secondary school certificates. There are two categories: those who have basic five-credit results with Maths and English and those without Maths and English. For the general duty, we have 153,593,000, while the support staff we have 14,400,” he stated.

What do you expect?

Even people working in other MDAs that is not paying like customs wants to port.

Until this country balance the payment across all MDAs, people will keep struggling to fit themselves where the money is finely paid.

How can you pay some agencies more than others. Because they generate revenues. Why not allow other agencies to generate revenues in their own ways to be able to get good pay?

Naija my kontry, just imagine application portal that was open for just a week and with the poor network from their server and over 500k plus applied, so what about if the application portal was open for a month and the network of their server was fast, that means like more than 5 million plus would have applied. The government really need to do more in terms of creating job employment and also need to encourage and partners some private organizations and businesses for more jobs to be created.

Employ all of them since jobless youth now decided to get a job so while panic. You should be happy that Nigeria youth is ready to work. This real definition of Custom jobs stampede. Recruitment go whine you but no panic.

The bribery and corruption in customs is a cash cow. Even govt workers from other agencies applied

The recruitment will be mired by scandals going by antecedents.

1. I guess that a lot of people are going to blame 'evil government' if they do not get the customs job. See the numbers

2. I also betcha many of those people have jobs. They just want a stable government job. Simple.

Funny enough, the majority of the 500k+ applicants are people who probably have jobs already. Some of these people are private sector workers who believe there's "job security" in the public sector...

Anyways, it's a free world.

They have already shared the slots only a few will get it.

I am sure 70% will be from the middle belt region. Those guys see Custom & Immigration job as their Chevron & NNPC

Maybe...but this is so large that I daresay even the relatives of politicans and who knows who will miss out.

The numbers are too great.

I am perturbed by the flaws in the statistics. Total applicants was about 600k but breakdown runs in 200millions...

Yes, that's due to the culture of indiscipline in Nigeria's public sector. The private sector is very competitive and performance based and it's all about doing the right thing and performing well, whereas government staff can be lazy and rude, this is something we all know...

Even then, many of these uniformed service jobs....if you are married, they can wake up one morning and post you to a different state, and your spouse would have to stay in the old base because he/she get job that they cannot leave, and there are no similar jobs in the new state for them

Gets worse when kids are involved.

Were they expecting anything less? The media and the politicians just love to remind the youths that they are hopeless.

20% of the applicants are likely employed and wish to get a cut from container clearance Largesse.

70% of the qualified candidates will come from special list of politicians.

It's over for the remaining poor souls who truly need the job vying for the remaining 10%

And I nor even apply ooo, so many like me didnt apply too even though we're job hunting.

Just imagine the employment deficit in this country!
