You're being clever by half. The problem is not him being Igbo or not, but being Imo not Rivers. The position is zoned to Rivers and not Imo

We lived near his sister and her family (Jehovah's Witnesses) in Owerri during his tenure as IGP.
That's how it is for Egbema people. They collect stipends and appointments based on any of the state (Rivers or Imo) wey belle face at the moment. Left to me, Dem be indigenes of both states after all No be dem tell una to demarcate their community with imaginary line of state border.

Nigeria and problematic political boundaries need to be separated completely. The killings going on in some border towns over political boundaries are avoidable.

Egbema people are one but are located in 3 different states. They were balkanized so they can not be a strong force seeing that they have rich mineral resources..
Some of my fellow Nkanu people are in Ebonyi state because of such boundaries. This issues need to be addressed

It is even the Igbo speaking Rivers men from other communities in Rivers that took Okiro to Court and won against him. Not th SE ones.

The people who actually challenged Mike Okiro's eligibility to contest for Ohanaeze Presidency are from Rivers State. Mike Okiro is an Egbema man, but Egbema has been split into two, Ohaji-Egbema LGA in Imo, and Egbema-Ndoni LGA in Rivers

Mike Okiro claims to be from Egbema in Rivers, but others claim he is from Egbema in Imo. Nobody is sure which Egbema he is from.

He was one of my favourites to become Ohanaeze President, but if he is from Egbema Imo, he cannot take the slot meant for Rivers State

This is the identity crises often faced by most people whose town or villages fall on geographical borders. They try to swing into any of the divides when it suits their narratives and ambitions. The list is endless.

The LP candidate in the last governor election of Edo State is an example. During his legal career, he played on as a Yoruba using only a Yoruba name. When it was time to contest as Governor of Edo State, he suddenly added and emphasised that his name is also Osaigbovo and started wearing mostly Bini attire. I was laughing then. Now that he lost, go and check when last he used that name or wore that attire.

I know Egbema and Ndoni well. Egbema people being at the border point between 3 states of Rivers, Imo and Anambra towards the coastal end of Ogbaru, lay claims to the 3 states when it suits them. Another example is the people of Uli, Mgbidi, Amorka.

Example is the Kalabari people of Rivers State. On land, they share boundaries with Rivers State and it's people. On the oil-rich swampy mangroves, they share boundaries with the Ijaw and Izon speaking people of Bayelsa state.

The list is endless as I said. Anyway, we are all one people. Na government or language or rivers, naim dey create all these boundaries.

Kalabari is Ijaw.

There different ways in which one can attained citizenship, by Birth, Descendant, Naturalisation, Marriage and Investment. Maybe his Rivers State Citizenship is by Birth or Naturalisation while that of his Imo State is by Descendant. So he can claimed any one at any point in time.

The contents of his press statements shows he is not actually backing down yet but want to challenge the court order he might likely get a favourable court judgment later with the evidence he has to cancel the Ohaneze Ndigbo election that's fixed for today whoever emerged today as president general should not rejoice yet.

He is actually from Egbema in Imo State and not the one of Rivers State but he used Rivers State slot all through his careers . I work with his biological younger sister who is married to an Umuahia man in one of the Federal Ministries. They are from Imo State indeed but politically they claim Rivers State indigeneship.
