If you don't know, police pulling you over is detainment, and before you can detained someone, there must be probable cause for it, (it's like checking someone's phone), detaining him illegally is an affront to his liberty of free movements as been enshrined by the constitution.

Police have to have a valid reason to stop you as in you broke the law: speeding above speed limit, break light not working, your car has been declared wanted etc.

The problem with Nigerian police is lack of intelligence gathering and surveillance. So they assume that check point is the way to stop or prevent crime.

Check points only started during the Civil war and they continued throughout the first 13 years of military rule.

Hasn't stopped since.

No "sane" country has daily uncountable check points. I saw only 1 check point in my 6 months stay in Accra, Ghana ( i don't know about now though).

when a real police stops you, they are stopping you on the Reasonable articulable suspicion committed like a traffic offense. In this case, there was no Reasonable articulable suspicion committed; no traffic violation. So there is no need of the police to mount a check point while delaying traffic. That is a criminal act by the police and it ought to be stopped.

Why would I fight with street cops every single day when, like Sowore, I have lived in the west for ages yet, unlike Sowore, I remain intelligent and discerning enough to understand that no civilised Country abuses, disregard , maltreat and demotivate her police force ,as Nigeria does, to then expect unimpeachable levels of integrity, model professionalism and dedication to service from them?

I am far more of a leader than Sowore because, in same position, I will be polite to the officers as much as possible and show all required documents I always ensure I have. I am wise enough to know my beef is never with street cops who have far less savings than my 10 year old kid living in the West.

My brief as a responsible, progressive and well-educated Nigerian, assuming I wish to be a change agent as Sowore pretends to be, is to tackle the organisations and leaders with the power to reform our security architecture so we gain motivated and dedicated police officers who will have integrity because satisfactory welfare and good remuneration package means they will do their jobs properly.

This is why I am on this forum fighting for regional policing daily, as obtains in the USA and UK, while the clown posing as a wannabe President does not even understand he should not be dragging with street cops who are products of their environment.

Sowore is over 50 yet still acts like a 21 year old University confra leader. Disgusting. Real leaders, dedicated to delivering solutions, will know Police are victims too and not exclusively the culprits as Nigerians insist. Real leaders focus on ideas, like core reforms of our policing in this case, not dragging with and fighting every street cop like a tout.

My experience with the police, over 3 years in Nigeria, has been top notch. Why? Because I use emotional intelligence to deal with the police as I know and understand their burden to see why they are what they are.

Most times this same policemen most Nigerians curse will all hailing Sir, sir, sir as I move off because I have treated them as human beings and they simply respond likewise. Psychology 101 ordinary folks should know talk less of leaders who want to reform, provide solutions, improve lives etc.

How will Sowore lead when he lacks the emotional intelligence to connect with people, and get the best out of them as all leaders can, whereas his preference is to physically fight anyone he disagrees, 'bolekaja' style, while insisting every situation only has street protests as solution? I've seen Sowore fight the powers that be and yes I know, he's not perfect.

I have lived in USA for 20 years & l have never seen a police check point except if tbere is a robbery or public- emergency situation.

Do you really believe that those police officers are there to truly enforce the law? By creating traffic problem at the congested Ikeja bridge, asking for your papers and fishing for errors, when don't find anything, they smile and ask 'anything for the boys', after wasting your time.

Do you really support this mess? How many times have you ever heard that thieves and criminals were caught at the Check points?

Do you even drive a car?

Do you know that criminal police officers once stopped me at the Check point because of the Jeep that I drive, asked me for my papers (I bind my papers like a book and keep 2 copies in the car). After looking through my papers, the other one distracted me and asked to search my car, while I was speaking with him, the one with my papers quickly tore out my insurance paper and threw it out while I was not looking.

He later called my attention, asked Oga 'where your insurance?'. I told him it was there, when I looked at the paper and discovered he had removed it, I laughed and confronted him about what he did. He remained adamant that he did nothing, that I had no insurance.

I simply went to the car, brought the other copy, and showed him the exact page of the papers that he evidently tore off.

He was ashamed and sunken, but reluctantly shouted 'please carry your car and go!'.

I was driving interstate that day, If I had enough time that day, I would have driven the nearest police station and raised hell up to the zonal level.

I would be ready to pay a journalist friend to write an article about it with the facts I have, if they refused to bring that errant officer to book.

Checkpoint are illegal 'toll points' created by the police to swindle and extort commuters and members of the public. They should be abolished.

Once you are in a Toyota Camry or Lexus car they must stop you, and they will profile you as a yahoo boy or drug pusher.
They will search all your luggage , strip you nearly naked by checking every part of your body.
There is one of the police which is a female, she don't wear the police uniform, she dress like a gangster and wearing gold cuban chain on her wrist and neck.
