In a move that has sparked controversy and division within traditional circles, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced the appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo.

The announcement, made on Friday by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, has been met with strong opposition from key kingmakers in Oyo town.

According to Oyelade, the appointment followed extensive consultations and traditional divinations conducted by the Oyomesi, the council of kingmakers responsible for selecting the Alaafin. “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade, after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo,” the commissioner stated.

However, the decision has not been well-received by all members of the Oyomesi. Five prominent kingmakers have openly rejected Owoade’s appointment, arguing that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin is the rightful Alaafin-elect. The protesting kingmakers include:

The Lagunna of Oyo, High Chief Wakeel Akindele
The Akinniku of Oyo, High Chief Hamzat Yusuf
A warrant chief representing the Asipa of Oyo, Chief Wahab Oyetunji
A warrant chief representing the Alapinni of Oyo, Chief Gbadebo Mufutau

The dissenting kingmakers claim that the selection process was flawed and that ongoing legal proceedings regarding the rightful successor to the throne have yet to be resolved. They insist that Prince Gbadegesin’s candidacy remains valid and should be upheld.

Hakeem Owoade is the Alaafin-Elect and will be presented with the staff of Office very soon. Gbadegesin can go back to Sokoto and tell his jihadist sponsors to make him an Emir in the north.

The Alaafin throne is not an Islamic or Fulani throne. Oranmiyan who founded the throne was not a Muslim. The same way we chased away Nyanmiris from taking over power in Lagos through Chinedu Rhodes Vivour is the same way we have prevented the Fulani imposter called Lukman from hijacking the great Alaafin throne of Oranmiyan. Whoever is not happy can go and die.

It's disconcerting to see people with PhDs exhibit behavior that contradicts their purported sophistication. Instead of engaging in civil discourse, they resort to unbecoming conduct of uneducated people. I struggle to understand this inconsistency. If they claim to be intellectuals, I implore them to conduct themselves in a manner befitting their academic stature.
