Re: Makoko Residents Get 3 Months Quit Notice From Lagos State Government by thesicilian:
Demolishing that slum is something that cannot be avoided. But the question is, is the Lagos state government ready to pay adequate compensation? Will the residents be relocated to a better housing scheme? And isn't 3 months too little notice for families to pack their entire lives from one area to another?

Modified:
For those saying the occupants of those slums are living there illegally and therefore do not deserve compensation, I have a few questions:
What makes their stay there illegal? Is it that they didn't buy those same 'lands' from from the Lagos state government through its various agencies? Or that they're not paying heavy taxes monthly just like other residents in other areas?

I wish them best of luck. Once government don decide sey dem one demolish...just carry your Kaya and move.

They enjoy demolishing no be small. Fast fast fast dem pull every thing down.

Especially when dem don decide how to share the place among themselves or don get one project ready once y'all are gone

I support adequate compensation but there are impediments

1. Most of the people living there are originally from Benin Republic

2. It is more of cultural thing for them to live on water Lagos state government tried to relocate them several times.

3. They occupy the place without government approval

You can’t leave your village, come to Lagos, occupy a place illegally and expect compensation when being asked to leave.

Go to oko baba and see for yourself.

But again same those who can’t stay in their villages are same who’ll call Lagos glorified slum

Illegality will be met with legality

They don’t own any space in the books 📚 for compensation as they are illegal occupants of the water fronts

If they can’t build that nonsense in Ikoyi of same water body then mainland should be cleaned too

They didn't buy the place. They started occupying the place as fishermen.

LASG has warned them severally over the years..
This isn't the first warning ..
They've been served notices well over 10 years now..
LASG just keeps postponing the evil day,but seems it's time..
They've been adequately warned..
Most if not all are there illegally so nothing like compensation..
Let no baga come and be saying notices and warnings were not given when the Bulldozers come to feast ..(i refer to the subhuman from the East).

Indeed, a lot of gentrification is needed over there tbh. The videos I've seen of living conditions is that environment are NOT dignifying at all.

Most of the residents there constitute fishing communities originally from the neighboring Benin Republic and Togo. This is why French is used to teach their children in the schools located within that environment. I don't know if some of them are ethnic Yoruba Beninoise or Yoruba Togolese immigrants or some other ethnic groups such as Ewe, Aja or Fon from Togo, and Benin Republics, but they have to move and some token resettlement money paid to them OR better still return to their countries of origin in the meantime. But Lagos State has to be very proactive to ensure that illegal settlements like Makoko don't keep popping up by using satellite imaging to track these slums and illegal fishing settlements.

I read an interview years back in the 2010s of another fishing slum somewhere on the Lekki-Ajah axis that was demolished by Lagos State and one of the older women who claimed she was born in the illegal settlement was interviewed and she said she's from Badagry (and had no where to go because she had never been to Badagry). It was very obvious she was desperate and wasn't telling the truth, obviously because she was a foreigner from either Benin Republic or Togo. How could she say she lives right in Lagos State and had never been to Badagry? It was one of the NGOs that brought the case to media attention and that's how the woman was interviewed. Lagos State MUST be proactive and anticipate such tantrums and resistance (aided by some of these human rights NGOs in the media) from Makoko as well, but that place MUST be leveled and rebuilt with better waterfront infrastructure. Period.

The 3 months notice must be last reminder as they must have been served before

Compensation is paid for property that has been legally acquired through the proper and authorized channels. Provide evidence that the current occupants of Makoko obtained the land legally.

Years ago, I worked amongst those stilt houses and have a first hand knowledge that the settlement need the occupants to move, compensation paid to those eligible and the place taken down, the area gentrified.

It's about time the entire place is removed so NGOs can look for another place to milk for Donor dollars
