Hello Nairalanders,

I’m in a bit of a dilemma and need your advice.

My wedding is coming up soon, and I’ve already done the introduction and paid all traditional rites in full. Recently, I got admitted into a PhD program in the U.S. with full funding and stipends to begin fall this year, and I plan to move there with my wife or for her to join me after I settle in the U.S.

Now here’s the issue: I’m considering doing only a registry wedding, which would cost just a few thousands of Naira. But if I go ahead with a full church/white wedding, it would cost millions. To be honest, I’d rather channel all the funds into our visa applications and relocation to the U.S. since this will be a huge step for both of us.

I understand the significance of a church wedding, but I feel it’s more practical to focus on our future together in the U.S. So, my questions are:

1. How can I make my family and her family understand my decision to opt for only the registry wedding?
2. How can I convince my fiancée to agree with this, as I’m sure she has her own expectations for the wedding?
3. Is there a way to balance both the financial aspects of the wedding and the future investment in our move?

I’m really looking forward to your thoughts and advice.

I think you need that PhD. It will educate you to handle simple decisions like these.

OP the most practical and logical thing to do is to relocate now before you miss that glorious opportunity. A registry wedding is still a legal wedding as long as you've done the traditional wedding.

That's the function of your secondary school, university and personal wisdom.
PHD is more about giving back to the society, making research and writing papers to help illuminate your chosen field and the younger generation.

Op obviously hasn't learnt those functions at secondary school or university, so hopefully might illuminate himself with a PhD.

I think a person considering a PhD should be decisive and able to resolve the simple issue you've posed in this thread. But if you are still struggling, please listen to wise thesicilian.
