Bodo-bonny Road Project: Julius Berger Reaffirms Commitment To Speedy Delivery by femisplash(op): 5:32pm On Jan 13, 2025
Construction giant, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, has reiterated its commitment to deliver the Bodo-Bonny road project in Rivers State.

The company, in a statement signed by Emieseifa James Agama, the Head of Corporate Communication, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, and made available to Daily Independent, said it remained steadfast in delivering quality infrastructure in line with Nigeria’s developmental needs.

The statement reads, “Julius Berger Nigeria Plc remains steadfast in its mission to deliver transformative infrastructure projects that align with Nigeria’s developmental priorities.”

“For over 50 years, we have partnered with the Federal Government, communities and stakeholders to deliver transformative infrastructure solutions with professionalism, transparency and adherence to the highest standards,” the statement read.

Julius Berger further explained the reason for temporary suspension of work on the project, blaming the development on inflation, as well as rising costs of inputs and foreign exchange, expressing joy at the resumption of work on the road in August, 2024, saying the project has shown their commitment despite inherent challenges.

“The Bodo-Bonny road project exemplifies our unwavering commitment to progress, despite significant operational and financial challenges.

“Extreme inflation, rising input costs, and FX volatility necessitated the declaration of force majeure and the suspension of works in November 2023. Nevertheless, Julius Berger resumed work in good faith in August 2024, five months before the formal execution of the contract, following a verbal agreement with the Federal Ministry of Works to adjust the contract value from N200 billion to N280 billion.

“Although inflationary pressures on materials have risen between 200% and 600% (and even higher in some cases), the relatively modest adjustment to the contract value was a welcome step. Julius Berger’s acceptance at the time reflects our commitment to addressing challenges impacting projects and fostering mutual agreements with the Federal Government to ensure their successful delivery.

“Furthermore, the absence of a tripartite funding agreement between the Federal Government, NLNG and Julius Berger continues to impact payments, requiring Julius Berger to pre-finance significant portions of the project. Despite these challenges, we have continued to make progress, including through the yuletide season, reaffirming our commitment to delivering this critical national asset.

“It is important to note that Julius Berger is the only contractor to have taken on this project in a challenging terrain previously abandoned by other contractors. Connecting Bonny Island to the mainland for the first time underscores our commitment to innovation and national development.

“We remain focused on fostering constructive engagement with all stakeholders to ensure the timely and successful delivery of the Bodo-Bonny Road, a project critical to Nigeria’s economic and social advancement and a cornerstone for the long-term development and prosperity of the Niger Delta.”

The foreign contractors are now getting the memo, Umahi is squeezing the larger-than-life ego out of their balls. We must redefine our budget performance. Kudos to Engr David Umahi.

I see cruise ships having two or three stops along the coastline of Nigeria in a matter of a few years. Huge economic impact!

A single cruise vessel arriving in Cozumel, Mexico generates an average daily spending of approximately $374,480. This figure includes:

Passenger spending: $313,740
Crew spending: $31,740
Port fees: $29,000

This total contribution to the local economy is per ship per day. Cozumel averaged 3.5 ships per day in 2024.

They are all important for the coast line. Bodo-Bonny is a vital link to the coast.

It is clear that there is pressure on Julius Berger. The likes of HiTech and Craneburg with more connections to people in govt are waiting on the wings to take over most of these 'lucrative' projects.

The major truth is that a professional engineer is incharge of the affairs and he cannot be bamboozled with excuses. If it's a lawyer or someone alien to the engineering profession, they can use engineering terms to confuse him. If oga at top is not complaining, the directors will keep quiet thinking the minister has collected money from the contractor.

In this case, the minister is an engineer, therefore he will not accept flimsy excuses as the foreign contractor usually does thinking they have all the connection

True that. Those directors are the biggest thieves.

Bonny island should have long been connected the mainland the federal govt has been making billions daily from the LNG company there. Billions of dollars generated there has been used to fund mega projects in lagos and the north while neglecting where the money is really coming from.

Great comment especially the " squeezing the larger ........" part of it.

More often than not, we always make the mistake that some entities are un- touchables.

True talk!
Julius Berger is one of the Big Contractors in Nigeria and they have been here since Decades!
But they can't be doing this Rasmoborge dealings,as they are Now part of the Corruption and Delays going on in Nigeria!
In Germany, most Works are done at Night,so as to avoid contacts with People but here in Nigeria, you collect our Monies, and you refused to deliver at specific date/ time,as if you are paying US !
JB ,as a Contractor is failing in Timely Deliveries of most Jobs!
That is why I will support that Other Foreign Companies should try their footholds in Contract Works here in Nigeria!,since JB we know is no longer fully committed to their works!
