tctrills:Flavius Josephus wrote what you quoted around AD 95 from the royal palace in Rome and Flavius Josephus was not even born during the ministry of Jesus. Now ask yourself why Flavius Josephus did not know of Christianity when he was 16 that's in AD 53 and did not know of Jesus followers when 3000 were added to the Christian faith on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41). Following this, Acts 2:47 states: "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." but here is an account from Flavius Josephus mentioned in his autobiography, "The Life of Josephus", that when he was 16 years old, he explored different Jewish sects in an effort to understand them and decide which one to follow. At the time, there were three major sects within Judaism: Pharisees: Known for their strict interpretation and adherence to Jewish law and oral traditions. Sadducees: A priestly, aristocratic group that rejected oral traditions and focused solely on the written Torah, often associated with Temple worship. Essenes: A more ascetic and separatist sect that emphasized communal living, piety, and withdrawal from mainstream society. So why was Christianity not mentioned, when Christianity was already popular at that time? |

MindHacker9009:The summary of your point is that we should not trust a known scholar and historian of the first Century but we should trust you a Nairaland nobody with zero qualification who is not able to quote any known historian. Even you should be able to see the holes in your argument |

tctrills:This quote was from Flavius Josephus: "When I was in my sixteenth year, I had a mind to make trial of the several sects that were among us; these are the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes." You have not answered my question on why did he not mention Christianity when Christianity was already popular then? You are the Nairaland nobody with zero qualification whose only qualification is your belief in the invented Jesus Christ! |

MaxInDHouse:The people after following Jesus for more than 3years left him thought he is becoming a nuisance due to what he said that sounds barbaric, those leaving God's organization today felt the same thing. One thing that's indisputable is that those that left Jesus can't associate with any other religion or sect because they don't know a better teacher than Jesus the same thing is applicable to those leaving God's organization today. You can prove me wrong by asking any of them to tell you the name of their newly found church after leaving God's organization! John 6:68 |

MindHacker9009:I sent you a direct quote from Josephus about Jesus Christ and and entire link of his works on Jesus Christ but you refused to read. How else can I help you? Now your question is a foolish one, and here is why. First you are comparing Christianity which was only a few decades old at the time of Josephus to sects that were centuries old and much more established how does that make sense. |

tctrills:You not answering my question is the foolish one. What you quoted was written around AD 95 from the royal palace in Rome long after Josephus was born compare that to the question I asked you which took place in AD 53! Jesus sect at that time were more popular than any other established: 3000 were added to the Christian faith on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41). Following this, Acts 2:47 states: "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. 1. Crowds Following Jesus for Healing and Teaching Matthew 4:23-25: "News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill... Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the region across the Jordan followed him." Mark 1:28: "News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee." Luke 5:15: "Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses." 2. Feeding of the 5,000 John 6:2: "A great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick." Mark 6:33-34: "Many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them..." 3. Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem Matthew 21:8-9: "A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'" Luke 19:37-38: "When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen." 4. Sermon on the Mount Matthew 5:1-2: "Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them." 5. Jesus' Popularity After Miracles Matthew 9:8: "When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man." Luke 4:37: "And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area." Mark 2:1-2: "A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them." 6. Palm Sunday John 12:12-13: "The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, 'Hosanna!' 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'" 7. Popularity with the Samaritans John 4:39-42: "Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony... So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers." (Modify) (Quote) (Report) (Share) |

Jesus sect at that time were more popular than any other established:[/quote]You keep giving in to foolishness my brother. Now you claim that Christianity was more popular than all the other Jewish sects. And you went on to show verses that show the number of Christian. Now let me ask you, how many pharisees were there at the time of Josephus? Stop saying things you have no idea of |

tctrills:You are the one giving in to foolishness. See what you wrote below, but same Flavius Josephus you quoted did not know about Christianity in AD 53! Even though you quoted that "He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks" "Here are the very words of the first Century historian Flavius Josephus About this time there lived Jesus, a wise man, if indeed one ought to call him a man. For he was one who performed surprising deeds and was a teacher of such people as accept the truth gladly. He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks. Here is a link so you can educate yourself on the works of Josephus https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus_on_Jesus" |

MindHacker9009:So do you now agree that it's exactly the same thing that happened to Jesus we are saying here? Peter asked: “Lord, whom shall we go away to? You have sayings of everlasting life. We have believed and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69 If they don't know where else to go then it's exactly what happened to Jesus that is repeating itself! ![]() |

MindHacker9009:Again you are very confused. It is evident that Josephus knew about Jesus Christ but your issue here is that he did not mention Christianity in his works. First, there is no evidence that the followers of Christ were generally called Christians in the first century so if his followers were not even known as Christians, why would Josephus write about that? Oga use your head. Now here are other historians who wrote about the early Christian persecution. 1. Tacitus (c. 56–120 CE) Work: Annals (Book 15, Chapter 44) What he wrote: Tacitus provides a non-Christian account of Nero's persecution of Christians after the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. He describes how Nero blamed Christians for the fire and subjected them to brutal punishments, including being burned alive, crucified, or thrown to wild animals. 2. Suetonius (c. 69–122 CE) Work: The Twelve Caesars (Life of Nero, Chapter 16; Life of Claudius, Chapter 25) What he wrote: Suetonius briefly mentions Christians, referring to them as followers of a "new and mischievous superstition." In Claudius's reign, he records the expulsion of Jews from Rome due to disturbances "instigated by Chrestus" (likely a reference to Christ). 3. Pliny the Younger (c. 61–113 CE) Work: Letters (Book 10, Letter 96) What he wrote: Pliny, as a Roman governor, wrote to Emperor Trajan seeking advice on how to handle Christians. He described their practices, such as meeting for worship and taking oaths to live moral lives, and his methods of interrogating and punishing them if they refused to renounce their faith. 4. Josephus (c. 37–100 CE) Work: Antiquities of the Jews (Book 20, Chapter 9) What he wrote: Josephus, a Jewish historian, mentions the execution of James, the brother of Jesus, by the high priest Ananus in 62 CE. While not directly about persecution, it reflects early hostility toward Christians from Jewish authorities. 5. Eusebius of Caesarea (c. 260–340 CE) Work: Ecclesiastical History What he wrote: Eusebius is one of the most comprehensive early Christian historians. He chronicled the persecutions of Christians from the time of Christ to the reign of Constantine. He included accounts of martyrs, imperial decrees, and the steadfastness of Christian communities. 6. Tertullian (c. 155–240 CE) Work: Apologeticus (The Apology) What he wrote: Tertullian defended Christianity against Roman accusations and criticized the unjust persecution of Christians. He argued for the rationality and morality of the Christian faith and highlighted the hypocrisy of Roman laws. 7. Lactantius (c. 250–325 CE) Work: De Mortibus Persecutorum (On the Deaths of the Persecutors) What he wrote: Lactantius provided a detailed account of the fates of emperors who persecuted Christians, portraying their deaths as divine punishment for their cruelty. He also described the Great Persecution under Diocletian. 8. Origen (c. 185–253 CE) Work: Against Celsus and other apologetic writings What he wrote: Origen defended Christianity against pagan critiques and indirectly documented Christian perseverance during times of persecution. 9. Martyr Acts and Hagiographies Examples: The Martyrdom of Polycarp, The Acts of the Scillitan Martyrs, and The Passion of Perpetua and Felicity. What they wrote: These texts offer vivid, detailed accounts of the trials and martyrdoms of early Christians, emphasizing their faith and courage in the face of persecution. Here are additional historians, writers, and sources that document the early Christian persecution: 10. Philo of Alexandria (c. 20 BCE–50 CE) Work: Embassy to Gaius (Legatio ad Gaium) What he wrote: Philo, a Jewish philosopher, provides context on the general hostility toward religious minorities in the Roman Empire, including early Christian sects. While not directly about Christian persecution, his work highlights the precarious status of monotheistic groups under Roman rule. 11. Clement of Rome (c. 35–99 CE) Work: First Epistle of Clement What he wrote: Clement, one of the earliest Church Fathers, mentions the sufferings of Christians in Rome and references the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul during Nero’s reign. 12. Ignatius of Antioch (c. 35–110 CE) Work: Epistles to the Churches (various letters) What he wrote: Ignatius, on his way to martyrdom in Rome, wrote letters to various Christian communities. These letters reflect his acceptance of suffering for Christ and offer insights into the challenges faced by Christians during persecution. 13. Polycarp of Smyrna (c. 69–155 CE) Work: The Martyrdom of Polycarp (authored by disciples, not by Polycarp himself) What it details: This early hagiographical account documents the trial and execution of Polycarp, emphasizing his steadfast faith and the broader context of Christian persecution in the Roman Empire. 14. The Acts of the Apostles (c. 60–90 CE) Attributed to: Luke What it details: The New Testament book chronicles the early church's growth and the persecution faced by apostles like Peter, Paul, and Stephen (the first Christian martyr). 15. Hegesippus (c. 110–180 CE) Work: Fragments cited in Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History What he wrote: Hegesippus wrote about the martyrdom of James the Just and other early Christian leaders, documenting internal and external challenges faced by the nascent church. 16. Justin Martyr (c. 100–165 CE) Work: First Apology and Second Apology What he wrote: Justin defended Christianity against Roman accusations and criticized pagan persecution of Christians. He provided descriptions of trials and executions, including his own eventual martyrdom. 17. The Epistle to Diognetus (2nd Century) What it discusses: This anonymous work defends Christianity against pagan criticisms and indirectly highlights the reasons for Christian persecution, such as their refusal to worship Roman gods or the emperor. 18. Dionysius of Alexandria (c. 190–265 CE) Work: Fragments cited in Eusebius’ Ecclesiastical History What he wrote: Dionysius described persecutions under the emperors Decius and Valerian, offering detailed accounts of Christian suffering and resilience. 19. Cyprian of Carthage (c. 200–258 CE) Work: On the Lapsed and Letters What he wrote: Cyprian reflected on the aftermath of persecutions, addressing issues like apostasy, reconciliation, and the steadfastness of martyrs. 20. Minucius Felix (c. 2nd–3rd Century) Work: Octavius What he wrote: This apologetic dialogue defended Christianity against Roman accusations and stereotypes, referencing the unjust treatment of Christians by Roman authorities. 21. The Sibylline Oracles (Christian Interpolations) What they contain: These prophetic writings, later Christianized, include veiled criticisms of Roman oppression and portray Christian persecution as part of apocalyptic struggles. 22. Melito of Sardis (c. 2nd Century) Work: Apology to Marcus Aurelius (now lost, but fragments survive) What he wrote: Melito appealed to the Roman emperor, highlighting injustices against Christians and pleading for better treatment. 23. Martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicity (c. 203 CE) What it details: This account of two Christian women martyred in Carthage provides a vivid narrative of their trial, imprisonment, and eventual execution. 24. Celsus (2nd Century) Work: The True Word (criticized by Origen in Against Celsus) What he wrote: Although a critic of Christianity, Celsus’ attacks on Christians shed light on Roman attitudes and accusations that led to persecution. 25. Epiphanius of Salamis (c. 310–403 CE) Work: Panarion What he wrote: While primarily a heresiologist, Epiphanius included accounts of early Christian suffering and martyrdom to highlight the faith's endurance. These sources provide diverse perspectives—both sympathetic and critical—on the experiences of early Christians under Roman rule. Now Mr Nobody, Who are you quoting? |

Kingsempires:No name.... It is a cultural things. Omenani/Odinala..wherever place you come from has their culture and traditions. And we have laws and custom guiding our actions and utterances. The laws are passed down orally from grand parents to parents to children...and it continues like that. There is always a justice system where cases are discussed and proper judgement melted out. We usually have a dibia who serve as the spiritual guide to the people.. When there is any need, he consults God on our behalf and conveys the solution most times with proverbs.... So...what name should I call it? |
