The Igbo World Assembly (IWA) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Chief Senator John Azuta Mbata on his election as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, as well as to the newly inaugurated National Executive Committee (NEC) of the organization.

In a press release jointly signed by IWA Chairman Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze, General Secretary Chief Oliver Nwankwor, and Vice Chairman Chief Christian Onuorah, the organization commended the outgoing leadership of Chief Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu for navigating challenges within the last 27 days to facilitate a smooth democratic transition.

The congratulatory message follows reports of controversy surrounding the recent Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo elections, which allegedly produced three rival presidents, including Dim Uchechukwu Nnam Okwukwu and Chief Jackson Omenazu, sparking concerns of factionalization.

A Renewed Opportunity for Progress

Despite the divisions, IWA expressed optimism about the new leadership's ability to foster unity and tackle pressing challenges. “The election offers a renewed opportunity to address key challenges, and IWA is optimistic that this new leadership will apply statesmanship and diplomacy to achieve unity, peace, greater collaboration, due process, development, and progress,” the statement read.

The organization also reaffirmed its unwavering support for Senator Mbata and his administration, stating, “Igbo World Assembly has always been and will remain a core backbone of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. We are committed to contributing to and supporting the leadership of Sen. John Azuta Mbata in the actualization of the Igbo Agenda.”

A Call for Unity and Peace

The IWA emphasized the importance of uniting Ndi Igbo globally, urging all parties involved in the leadership disputes to set aside their differences for the greater good. “We strongly plead with notable persons in Rivers State and beyond to sheath their swords, bury their differences, and stand behind Senator John Azuta Mbata for Igbo unity,” the statement appealed.

The organization also reiterated its commitment to Igbo peace, security, and progress, highlighting its role as the umbrella body for Ndi Igbo in the Diaspora. With representation from all continents, IWA focuses on protecting and promoting the economic, political, socio-cultural, and educational interests of Ndi Igbo worldwide.

Vision for Ndi Igbo

Outlining its goals, IWA emphasized the need for collective action, equity, and cultural preservation:

“Ndi Igbo must speak with one voice and act in one accord. We must strive for equity, promote our welfare, establish and prosper our economies, tell our stories, and celebrate our culture and history.”
IWA concluded its statement by wishing the new leadership good health and divine wisdom throughout their tenure.
