IF his parents were already residing In Nigeria before he left, who then filed for him?
That should be the starting point...
IF he was never married to a US citizen then that excludes that possibility...
Except a sibling had filed for him..(rare possibility)

The next in line could be student visa or J visa or H1B visa...and people with such don't just leave any how, else you may get a surprise package at the entry point.
I have seen someone who has spent 42 years in the United States without returning home for fear of Immigration punishment.
That's the highest I have seen & I believe the worst is out there.

I once had a friend who was studying in the UK when I was still in varsity, that guy couldn't go a year without coming back to SA... He'll come at least once or twice in a year... He complained about home sickness and it's like such is also very common amongst other South Africans as well.

Most people stay longer, it's not a must to come home especially if you don't have any important reason to do so, personally I would stay longer...for people with relocation being their reason for leaving their country of birth some usually tend to stay longer cuz they have no intention of coming home anytime soon, for some one like me if my people want to see me badly I can arrange for them to come over or I come when I'm ready to.
