January 15th 1966 Coup Is The Only Time Nigerians Remember Coup Is Bad by gidgiddy(op):
In the history of Nigeria, there were 8 coups:
Nzeogwu coup, Murtala Mohammed Coup1, Murtala Mohammed Coup 2, Dimka coup, Buhari coup, Babangida's coup, Orkah coup and Abacha coup. Some of these coups were very bloody, some were bloodless while some had minimal casualties. What all these coups have in common was that the ring leaders of each of them were usually from a particular part of the country

The Nzeogwu coup claimed about 20 lives, however, it is only the Nzeogwu coup that has ethnic tag. Some call it 'Igbo coup'. It is the only coup some unscrupulous Nigerians remember. Mohammeds coup is not a 'Hausa coup', Buhari's coup is never a 'Fulani coup', Babangida's coup is never a 'Gwari coup', Abachas coup is never a 'Kanuri coup'

Remarkably, Nigeria has a terrible history of honouring coup plotters. Murtala Mohammed killed over 300 people in his coup including the military head of State, Ironsi, and Military Governor of the Western Region, Fajuyi. That same Murtala Mohammed was given the special honour of being put on the N20 note, has Nigerias busiest Airport named after him, has highways and buildings named after him, all for being a successful coup plotter!

Despite the fact that Muhammadu Buhari overthrew the democratically elected regime of Shagari, Nigerians later elected Buhari President.

Like Ironsi, Obasanjo put down a bloody coup and seized power, the same Obasanjo was later elected President

Babangida seized power in a military coup, that same Babangida is still a very influential and wealthy man in in Nigeria and holds numerous national honours

Despite having a long history of honouring coup plotters, the only time Nigerians remember that military coup is a bad thing is with January 15th 1966 coup, so they can call it 'Igbo coup'

8 coups, they only remember one? And you think there is anything like 'one Nigeria'?

Ok oo

OP don't bother wasting your time. If tinubu was doing well, bastardds like omokri will have no need trying to demarket Obi. Actually tribalism is the only thing they think can work for them

So no need engaging these idiots.
Coup or not we are all together enjoying Tinubu's government.

OP,
While Major Nzeogwu coup was seen as an Igbo Coup,
Dimka's Coup was also seen as a Middle Belt Jos Plateau coup. sad

Murtala's Hausa Soldiers Friends saw it like that and they claimed It was Gowon (From Plateau state) who sent Dimka to carry out the Dastardly act. sad

This is the Reason why T. Y. Danjuma (From Taraba) was afraid to take over as Head of State,.

He would have been Killed like Aguiyi Ironsi, whom He himself Ironically Killed for Similar reasons. smiley smiley

This deliberate and selective amnesia is appalling. Some individuals focus solely on their leaders' fate during the January 15, 1966, coup while conveniently ignoring the brutal massacre of their own leaders in the July 29, 1966, counter-coup in ibadan.

When they teach Nigerian history, will they teach that there was one coup in Nigeria or 8 coups?

The civil was not because of the coup. The civil war happened because Gowon broke the Aburi agreement he signed with Ojukwu. That's a different thing entirely. Almost every country in Africa has had military coup, none fought war over it
