Some families in Lagos here don't even get to see one another in months and years not to talk of someone based abroad. It's not easy anywhere.

IF his parents were already residing In Nigeria before he left, who then filed for him?
That should be the starting point...
IF he was never married to a US citizen then that excludes that possibility...
Except a sibling had filed for him..(rare possibility)

The next in line could be student visa or J visa or H1B visa...and people with such don't just leave any how, else you may get a surprise package at the entry point.
I have seen someone who has spent 42 years in the United States without returning home for fear of Immigration punishment.
That's the highest I have seen & I believe the worst is out there.

He doesn't have to be, there are people with multiple entry due to the lengthy. My guy comes and goes because his is visa is more than 5 years.

All these are unnecessary, he needs to pipe low. These days, boys are not smiling and police are sleeping on duty.

For someone that grew up being close to all my family members and is still close to them even today, I'm talking about everyone including my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and cousins, I can't imagine myself being in the same situation as those family members in Nigeria.

I also know some people who are studying or have studied abroad, they'd always make sure to find time to visit home every year.

If you continue disturbing someone on something, you can directly or indirectly pose a danger to their life without even knowing it's your fault, for e.g, i almost had an accident once trying to pick my mom's call walking on the street, my mom is the type of person who can call you till your battery goes off especially if you're aren't there to answer on time, so basically trying to get your family member/spouse/siblings etc to go against their own timing to please yours can affect them in many ways you don't understand thereby joepardizing their work, safety and wellbeing.

All I'm saying is don't conclude, allow people do things on their own timing. you can't just say you won't wanna have anything to do with any of your family members if they stay overseas for years without visiting home, you may not know how it's going for them. All am saying.
