The coup was not successful, it was brutal and clearly selective in terms of victims.

The major beneficiary Aguyi Ironsi, was in power for 6 months, in which no single person was prosecuted for an unsuccessful coup.

The coup also successfuly changed the governing class from civilians to the military..so perhaps the coup is more successful than we think.
