Blackout hits Abuja Central Area as vandals steal 132KV underground cables by Antoeni(op): 5:13pm On Jan 17, 2025
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday said the Presidential Villa has been thrown into darkness as rising cases of theft of electricity cables disrupt power supply.

TCN, in a statement, and another from the Power Minister, Adebayo Adelabu, showed that a 132kV transmission line and underground cables supplying power to central parts of the Federal Capital Territory and its environs were vandalised.

The vandalised 132kV underground cable transports bulk electricity to TCN’s 132kV Central Area transmission substation, which then supplies power through eight distribution feeders to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company.

General Manager at TCN, Ndidi Mba, said the incident, which occurred around the Millennium Park, a few kilometres away from the Presidential Villa, saw the vandals carting away 40 meters of 1x500mm² XLPE conductors on the two 132kV transmission lines.

She said areas experiencing power outages include Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa.

Mba added that TCN engineers have already been mobilised to the site of the incident to repair the vandalised cables.

Tinubucally speaking this country isn't serious with getting stable electricity. Una go employ extra securities for power vandals just like pipelines theft and vandals. When vagabonds see a loosed angle, they exploit it. The day FG do accounts of yearly cost of vandalized power items, people go scream. How can govt be doing light wey never good and vandals keep vandalizing it?

The issue of abokis vandalizing power installations should be declared a national emergency, this is what we keep suffering in my area, we keep replacing armoured cables every time due to vandalism from abokis, bedc officials don't give a damn whether we remain in darkness or not as long as estimated billing continues embarassed

Cable vandals are too rampant these days. They are almost everywhere. Even in the neighborhoods, they burgle homes to steal cable wires. Who are those buying all these vandalized cables?
