Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the UK Conservative Party, has again delivered a critique of Nigeria’s governance, warning that Britain must not follow in the footsteps of what she described as "poor" leadership that has destroyed lives in her home country.

In her first speech of the year on Thursday, Badenoch made her case for "real conservatism" that promises a "better, richer, and safer" future for the younger generation in Britain.

Her comments came amid growing frustrations over what she perceives as the consequences of Nigeria’s prolonged mismanagement and corruption.

Badenoch, known for her outspokenness, has previously condemned the Nigerian police, calling them "armed robbers" for the way they intimidate citizens.

The latest round of criticism, however, has sparked anger from Nigerian officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who responded by urging Badenoch to change her name if she does not wish to be associated with the "greatest black nation on earth."

According to her, “Why this matters so much to me is because I know what it is like to have something and lose it. I don’t want Britain to lose what it has.

“I grew up in a poor country, and I watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer and poorer despite working harder as their money disappeared with inflation,” Badenoch said.

However, the Tory leader shared her personal story of moving to the UK at 16 with just her father’s last £100, driven by the hope of a better life.

She expressed a strong desire to prevent the UK from ever becoming like Nigeria, where poor governance devastates lives.

“When I came to the UK at 16, I had my father’s last £100 and the hope for a better future. I’ve experienced the consequences of a government that destroys lives, and I never, ever want that to happen here,” Ms. Badenoch said.

It's only fools that would condemn her.
Especially after watching that budget defence by the IGP where some rep members were openly playing underhand games.

Kemi is RIGHT.

Let's analyze it. In 2014, Nigerians with income bracket of N1m could afford to start a building project. I remember my first house, I bought the land for N2.5m, twice my annual salary. Sold my stock and started building. My take home plus bonus built the house.

Fast forward to 2024, ten years after, with N5m salary, you cannot afford to start building anything, except you are doing it in your village. If you want to biuld in city like Lagos, you will have to save atleat N50m to afford the same kind I bought for N2.5m.

Pensioners are even worse off. Nigerians lack Healthcare, hence people die very young.
My elder brother retired as a civil servant. His monthly pension was less than N100,000. First off he will struggle to get it, yet it does little to nothing. Today, I send him stipends because his pension cannot pay for his medication.

The Nigerian middle class is completely wiped out.
Naira has become a useless currency, nothings thanks to Buhari and Tinubu's misrule.
Yet you hear synchophants like Reno Omokri, FFK, Doyin Okupe and NL herds like Helienus praising failure.

If Nigeria has 3 Kemis hammering home the truth, our systems will begin to be reformed. Rather, we have ethnic bigots, political jobbers, corrupt judges and never do well followers praising FAILURES

Kemi is talking about a Nigerian system that allows drug dealers and 419ers becomes successful politicians simply because they have deep pockets and can bribe Judges like Kekere-Ekun who declared an unpopular man who came 4th in the Guber election, the governor of Imo State (Hope Uzodinma), effectively destroying all the gains and peace enjoyed by that state.

No sane country will ever want to be like that. I stand with Kemi.

If she did not leave the country in her prime to the UK, she might have ended up killed in Ogun state for rituals, or kidnapped on her way to Sokoto for NYSC, or even shot by the police at a Checkpoint, because the corrupt Judges and politicians don't care, as long as 80% of policemen are deployed to guard them from the insecurities they created. No sugarcoating it.

That is why I consider people like Abike Dabiri of NIDCOM as hypocrites. You create a toxic system driving out young people out of the country. They go abroad send in remittances, you jump up and jubilate.

Face the topic. Kemi is already saved from your poverty stricken Nigeria. Since you have been living in that slum you call "home", she rose to become Leader of Opposition in far away UK.
Ask yourself, what did my parents achieve in life? If your sister was sound enough to be Kemi, you would have relocated from your Osun village to London.

Every sensible Nigerians know that poor leadership is the major cause of our problems. The question is "who were those poor leaders?" We shouldn't pin this tag on our politicians alone, our traditional and religious leaders have also failed us. Imagine a country with uncountable number of churches, mosques, pastors and imams still battles with corruption.

Badenoch on misgovernance: “I don’t want Britain to be like poor Nigeria”

January 18, 2025
Imoh Bright

Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, has once again voiced sharp criticism of her home country, Nigeria, highlighting its governance failures during a speech outlining her vision for “real conservatism” in Britain.

Speaking on Thursday, Badenoch reflected on her upbringing in Nigeria, recounting the economic struggles her family faced under prolonged misgovernance. She warned against policies that could lead Britain down a similar path.

“I grew up in a poor country, and I watched my relatively wealthy family become poorer and poorer and poorer despite working harder as their money disappeared with inflation,” she said.

Badenoch, who migrated to the UK at 16 with her father’s last £100, described her determination to prevent Britain from experiencing the hardships she witnessed in Nigeria.

“I’ve lived with the consequences of a terrible government that destroys lives, and I never ever want that to happen here,” Badenoch emphasized, linking her experiences to her push for a “better, richer, and safer” future for younger Brits.

This is not the first time Badenoch has openly criticized Nigeria. She previously described the Nigerian police as “armed robbers,” accusing them of intimidating citizens rather than protecting them.

Her remarks have sparked controversy, with Vice President Kashim Shettima recently responding to her comments. “If she doesn’t want any association with the greatest black nation on earth, Nigeria, she should change her name,” Shettima said.

Badenoch’s remarks resonate with a broader critique of governance in Nigeria, a country often labeled as underachieving despite its vast potential. However, her repeated public criticisms have also raised questions about the balance between calling out failures and maintaining pride in one’s heritage.

As Badenoch advances her conservative agenda in the UK, her reflections on Nigeria serve as a stark reminder of the human cost of failed leadership.
