push23:What was successful about the coup, it is as senseless as saying that Dimka’s coup was a successful coup because the commander in Chief was murdered? |

A successful coup where the coup plotters ended up prison. Using this logic, Buka Suka Dimka’s coup against Murtala Muhammad in February 1976 was a successful coup too. |

iamnotillicit:Dem warn the guy make e escape. Dude dey form Incredible Hulk till the very end. Aguiyi Ironsi warned these complacent politicians of an impending coup. His intelligence report was discarded. Those politicians, the coupists, Nwafor Orizu and Ironsi, ubanka to all of them. Zanna Bukar Dipcharima would have succeeded the slain Tafawa Balewa as Prime Minister, but that sell out called Nwafor Orizu clearly had other plans. |

Nigeria had 4 seats of power then which which had capitals and were controlled from: kaduna for entire northern region (present day NW, NE and NC) Enugu ( present day SE and SS) Benin ( parts of present day SS and SW) Ibadan (most parts of present day SW) and Lagos which was the federal capital. They were all headed by premiers who had political powers that were almost at par with the then prime minister tafawa balewa ( equivalent of a president today) . Zik was a ceremonial president with no political power. On January 15 1966 Kaduna Nzeogwu led a group of young army officers who tagged themselves revolutionaries and they decided to change the government which they perceived as corrupt to pave way for their own ideas which they believed would make Nigeria giant of Africa. They started with Enugu where MI Okpara was receiving the Archbishop of Canterbury and ordered him to come outside from the arena. The archbishop sending they wanted to kill him appealed to them to wait till he leaves before they take Okpara but before he could finish his sermon Okpara escaped. Another group went to Dennis Osadebey but I don’t know how he escaped . Others went and killed other leaders like Ahmadu bello, Akintola, balewa etc and all these were happening simultaneously all over Nigeria that night. The coup failed because they couldn’t kill Aguiyi Ironsi who was the highest ranking military officer then and without the army you haven’t won a coup. Emmanuel Ifeajuna team missed Aguiyi by whiskers at Ikoyi because they didn’t recognize him in civilian clothes and car. Ironsi after passing them learned of the coup on his car radio and instead of the party he was going to made a detour to the barracks and mobilize soldiers who took effective control of the presidency vacated by unknown whereabouts balewa. He used military decrees to solidify his position and in the position became an accidental head of state. He declared the coup plotters wanted on radio. They all ran away but later returned and were arrested. Aguiyi refused to try them for 6 months which fueled resentment of bias across the country leading to massacre of Igbos in the north before Aguiyi was eventually toppled in a counter coup led by TY Danjuma and Gowon installed as president followed by a bloody civil war of almost three years |

![]() Can you believe that at the time Azikiwe did this interview below on the 16th of Jan 1966 Gen ironsi had not yet taken Power look outside the Window you can see it is broad daylight Listen to azikiwe Dr Orizu who was the Acting President didn't invite Gen ironsi to takeover Power until 10 minutes to midnight on that same day (16th of January 1966 ) which couldn't have been less than about 6 hours after azikiwe gave this interview to the British Press yet azikiwe was speaking as if Gen ironsi was already in Power Gen ironsi didn't take Power until 17th Jan 1966 the next day From his replies you can see that azikiwe was completely uninterested in finding Prime Minister Balewa who had only been kidnapped and was only missing at the time of this interview and whose body was not found until almost a week later but see how so completely confident Azikiwe was because he knew already that Balewa wouldn't be found alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCD7uQsSU6U?si=_lCuNifvAGEIRXrp |

push23:Ok, how many of them held positions in the purported government their coup brought in, since it was a success? What was the motive of their coup, was it just to kill some old unarmed defenseless men that gave them the guns they used to murder them? Those senseless idiot youths were the ones that exposed Nigeria to Military rule from 1966-1999. |

aariwa:How convenient that only Okpara (the Igbo premier) escaped out of the premiers. How convenient that only Balewa (the only non Igbo among the top 4 most important federal office holders) was killed, while the remaining 3 (all igbos) "escaped". You clowns live fooling yourselves. |

raumdeuter:Aguiyi Ironsi tipped off the politicians of an impending coup. Tafawa Balewa, Ladoke Akintola etc didn’t act on the intelligence report. Don’t take my word for it, research and prove me otherwise. Were they tipped off or not? Read the first two paragraphs

OkCornel:Despite the alleged tip off, what actions did the Ibo politiicians take to act on it? Orizu, Wachukwu, Okpara Osadebey were all in the country and were not visited by coupists Any reason? |
| Re: 15, 1 by OkCornel(m): 2:54pm On Jan 24, 2025 |
raumdeuter:Arthur Unegbe, an Igbo military officer who was in charge of the armoury was shot dead by the coup plotters for not handing over the keys. Hmmm…an Igbo coup indeed. I guess Unegbe is part of the coup plotters since he’s Igbo too right? By the way like I mentioned earlier, the politicians were warned by Ironsi on January 12 by an impending coup. Governments in other African countries (DRC, Togo, Dahomey, Central African Republic) were toppled before that of Nigeria. But what did the politicians do? Ahmadu Bello did nothing to secure himself. Tafawa Balewa did nothing to secure himself. Ladoke Akintola was forming Incredible Hulk instead of escaping to save his life. But hey, let’s blame Ironsi for tipping off the politicians and let’s also blame the politicians that acted on the tip off. I still have my grouse with Nwafor Orizu though. The right thing to do after the coup was aborted was to hand over power to Zanna Dipcharima to continue as the prime minister rather than his fellow Igbo man in the military. Poisonous seed of tribalism. |
