A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), retired Lt Gen. Jeremiah Useni, is dead.

He passed away on Thursday at the age of 82 after a protracted illness.

His death was announced in a statement issued in Jos by Gyang Bere, the Director of Press and Public Affairs to Plateau State governor, Caleb Mutfwang.

He described the of the former Minister and Quarter Master General of the Nigerian Army as a tremendous loss not only to his immediate family but also to the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the entire nation.

Highlighting the roles played by the late army general, Governor Mutfwang noted that he left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape with his tireless efforts to promote peace and security, especially in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.

The governor prayed that God grants the family, Plateau state, and the nation the strength and fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss, and also asked for God’s divine presence to comfort and provide solace in the days ahead.

Abacha was known to be terminally ill before he did, at least by the top hierarchy, and Jeremiah was the next highest ranking military officer after Diya, who was already on death row, pending Abacha's signature.

Bamaiyi raised the suspicion at the Provisional Ruling Council Officer's meeting following Abacha's death that Useni was indeed the last person who was with Abacha before he died that morning. Others present agreed.

The next person in line, after Useni was the Chief of Defence Staff: Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar who was not particularly in Abacha's good books, and was rumoured to be pencilled for retirement at about the time the Abacha transition to civilian rule was also heating up - just when Abacha died.

The rest, they say, is history. IF Useni hadn't been with his friend Abacha in the early hours of June 8 1998, when Abacha died, that suspicious may not have arisen and he may well have automatically become Head of State when Abacha died, as Lt. Gen Diya was already convicted at the time.

Fate.

Abdulsalami went on to run the shortest transition programme in Nigeria's history and he remains continually respected for that. May Nigeria become great again in my lifetime.

U made me laugh with the Heaven/Hell... because u don't know where he's qualified to go to. I will add earth/soil. He didn't take anything to the soil, what if Jehovah witness (or other religion) are right that we all just decompose here and that's it?

He missed out becoming the successor to Abacha not because of the reason you gave but because he was not occupying the highest military ranking position in the hierarchy even though he and Oladipo Diya were the only ranking Lieutenant Generals in the Army and the only 3 Star Generals in the Armed Forces but for Diya's incarceration.

As at the time of the death of Abacha, Useni was not occupying a strategic military position rather, he was occupying a mare political office, Minister of the FCT. After the Commander in chief of the Armed Forces was supposed to be the Chief of General Staff, followed by the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff.

Gen. Useni was never in the mix for succession due to the political office he was occupying at that moment in time. Religion, tribe or what have you had nothing to do with it.
