He was well known in Ibadan night life cycles, when he was a GOC, for heavy drinking and dating. It was not fate that prevented Useni from becoming the president when Abacha died.
It was the Fulani agenda that stopped him. It was well calculated.
If Useni was a nothern Muslim or Fulani, he would have become the president.
He was a middle belt Christian.
Useni was a victim of religious, tribal and regional sentiment and nepotism.

The "suspicion" was very convenient, too, because it prevented a "Christian", or in any case, a non-muslim, from ruling Nigeria at the time.

It's worthy of note to remember that the last time a non-muslim ruled prior to that time was 1979 (OBJ), and Muslims had held sway for 19 unbroken years at that point.

I won't count the Sonekan charade because he wasn't in charge, and we all know it.

The same OBJ would later take over at the 20-year mark, in 1999.

He missed out becoming the successor to Abacha not because of the reason you gave but because he was not occupying the highest ranking position in the hierarchy even though he was the only ranking Lieutenant General in the Army and the only 3 Star General in the Armed Forces which only Diya was but for his incarceration. As at the time of death of Abacha, Useni was not occupying a strategic military position rather, he was occupying a political office, Minister of the FCT. After the Commander in chief of the Armed Forces was supposed to be the Chief of General Staff, followed by the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff.

Gen. Useni was never in the mix for succession due to the political office he was occupying at that moment in time.

Not only that,he was a Christian

So, this man was alive all these while and nobody heard of him until his demise was announced. What a life? In his reigning days as "Jerry boy", they rule as if there's no tomorrow. Nothing last forever indeed.
