Is "Japa" The Only Way To A Better Future For Nigerians? by Solofresh2(op): 7:09pm On Jan 23, 2025
In recent years, the "Japa syndrome"—the mass emigration of Nigerians to other countries—has become a hot topic. Many believe that leaving the country is the only way to secure a brighter future, with better job opportunities, education, and quality of life.

But is this the only solution? Some argue that staying in Nigeria and working to improve the system is more fulfilling, while others feel the opportunities abroad are too good to ignore.

Let’s discuss:

Is "Japa" a short-term escape or a long-term solution?

Can Nigeria ever become a place where its citizens thrive without wanting to leave?

For those who have left, is life abroad as easy as it seems?

Nobody is discussing anything. Do your own research and arrive at your own conclusion.

You want to stir up that stupid Nigeria vs abroad argument. This is 2025, use your time wisely

nigerian population 230m, total japa since 2020 is not up to 5m. Which is less than 2%. Why not focus on the 225m remaining in Nigeria?

Many countries including UAE, Canada,Uk , Australia have shut the doors on many immigrants plus exchange rate wahala in Nigeria . Meaning many can no longer afford to japa or see chance to japa. Have those remaining now developed Nigeria?

My question is that, why do people who have lived abroad for some years(whether short or long), usually come back to Nigeria las las to retire? I thought they said they are running away from corruption. Why coming back?

The point is that the focus should shift from emigration to improving governance and opportunities within Nigeria. Development depends on collective action, not just on migration.

If its having money in foreign currency or have made alot of money with abroad, they will still face the corruption(killings, kidnapping, bad policies, social amenities, oppression) in Nigeria!
Going to abroad for better healthcare. So why did they came back if they will still visit overseas again. Am not convinced with this your response.

The only reason we go to abroad is to make alot of money and come back home!

They can do as they please, after-all they are still Nigerians and they don't need your permission to relocate back home, and when a lot of them come back to Nigeria to retire, their pensions in foreign currency (euros, pounds sterling etc) give them a MUCH better standard of living than the average Nigerian retiree... also when they are retired, they have lesser use of the Nigerian system, as they can still go back or visit abroad for better healthcare and so on... so corruption becomes less of an issue to them.

Any Nigerian who wants to Japa should immediately sell off all his properties and Japa. Besides our population is just too much. Let then all leave so we see space.

I am so sick of this for/against migrating abroad. Are Nigerians the only people in the planet whose people are emigrating? The current population of Nigeria is 220 million. The total number of Nigerians in the diaspora bar the descendants of slaves are less than 5 million. The total number of Nigerians living in Europe is less than 700,000. In contrast, the number of Moroccans in Spain alone is over 1 million. You don't see Moroccans making noise. The total number of Nigerians in North America is less than 1 million.Meanwhile, the population of Vietnamese in the U.S. alone is more than 2 million. Yet, they don't make noise like us.

The number of Nigerians who have left Nigeria since APC came to power in 2015 is less than 250,000. Yet, we are making it look like half the population have JAPA. What are the remaining 200 million doing to improve Nigeria? What percentage of the 200 million Nigerians are "balling"?With the current exchange rate and restrictive immigration policies of many western countries, the number of Nigerians leaving has drastically reduced. This is a 2025. Enough of this s**t.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in travelling abroad whether for vacation, schooling, work or permanent citizenship. It is some people's destiny, there is no need to be afraid. THE MANY TRIBES YOU SEE IN NIGERIA MIGRATED FROM SOMEWHERE.
