DrTee1:
Only fate prevented him from becoming Nigeria's President after the demise of Abacha.

Abacha was known to be terminally ill before he did, at least by the top hierarchy, and Jeremiah was the next highest ranking military officer after Diya, who was already on death row, pending Abacha's signature.

Bamaiyi raised the suspicion at the Provisional Ruling Council Officer's meeting following Abacha's death that Useni was indeed the last person who was with Abacha before he died that morning. Others present agreed.

The next person in line, after Useni was the Chief of Defence Staff: Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar who was not particularly in Abacha's good books, and was rumoured to be pencilled for retirement at about the time the Abacha transition to civilian rule was also heating up - just when Abacha died.

The rest, they say, is history. IF Useni hadn't been with his friend Abacha in the early hours of June 8 1998, when Abacha died, that suspicious may not have arisen and he may well have automatically become Head of State when Abacha died, as Lt. Gen Diya was already convicted at the time.

Fate.

Abdulsalami went on to run the shortest transition programme in Nigeria's history and he remains continually respected for that. May Nigeria become great again in my lifetime.
Abacha was NOT terminally ill.

Abacha was hale and hearty before he died mysteriously that day.

Your analysis shows you're actually a senior man cheesy

However, you forgot to add the Hamza AL Mustapha's factor as a reason why Useni couldn't become president after the demise of Abacha. Hamza never liked Useni from the very beginning. Remember that Hamza was the CSO to Abacha, he disliked Useni for being too close to his Oga, and his greed for money. He saw Useni as an opportunist who will go any length with Abacha to get whatever he wants without necessarily passing through him as the CSO.

After Abacha's death, Hamza vowed that Useni will never succeed him. He personally called Abdulsalami Abubakar to accept succeeding Abacha or he, himself will mount the mantle of leadership instead of Useni. That his call was a sign of loyalty and respect to him. The Religion factor also played a crucial role in disqualifying Useni. They needed a Muslim of which, Useni was not.

You are on point, particularly on the religious angle. The Northern power brokers and Establishment would never have agreed with the idea of an Useni from Plateau State to succeed Abacha.

RIP General Useni.

I liked his jolly good nature when he was minister of fct. He didn't always appear as a dark faced general like most of his colleagues. He had a somewhat approachable mien. However, his losing his wife and son in that plane crash must have brought out the steel in him. This must have helped him survive those harrowing days.

So, this man was alive all these while and nobody heard of him until his demise was announced. What a life? In his reigning days as "Jerry boy", they rule as if there's no tomorrow. Nothing last forever indeed.
He was in the Senate representing his senatorial zone. Although he was looking quite sick and frail. He hardly contributed in the floor. Rip to him.

He missed out becoming the successor to Abacha not because of the reason you gave but because he was not occupying the highest military ranking position in the hierarchy even though he and Oladipo Diya were the only ranking Lieutenant Generals in the Army and the only 3 Star Generals in the Armed Forces but for Diya's incarceration.

As at the time of the death of Abacha, Useni was not occupying a strategic military position rather, he was occupying a mare political office, Minister of the FCT. After the Commander in chief of the Armed Forces was supposed to be the Chief of General Staff, followed by the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff, the Chief of Naval Staff and the Chief of the Air Staff.

Gen. Useni was never in the mix for succession due to the political office he was occupying at that moment in time. Religion, tribe or what have you had nothing to do with it.
This is absolute false, Gen.Hussain was the highest ranking military officer at that time.. The reason he could not succeed Abatcha were.

1. He was the last person that saw the C in C

2. He is of the Minority Tribe in the North

3. Religious consideration being a Christian..

4. IBB Factor: Abdulsalam is a close pady of IBB and direct neighbor at uphill in Minna and IBB were the power brokers then, although IBB was not Physically present at the meeting he was amongst those that were consulted..

5. Gen Bamaiyi being the Chief of Army Staff then hated Gen. Husseini because of his closeness to Abatcha and he stood firm that Husseini should not be considered, because he also had ambition..
Don't forget that it was Al Mustafa who converged the meeting and could have executed all this Generals if he he wanted power, being the the Chief Security officer of the Villa and the only one who knew of the Presidents Passing...

General Hussaini Letter contested the Governorship of Plateau State in 2019 and lost..

The Last time I watched his interview he confessed that he was battling with diabetes...

May the Generals saul rest in peace...

It was not fate that prevented Useni from becoming the president when Abacha died.
It was the Fulani agenda that stopped him. It was well calculated.
If Useni was a nothern Muslim or Fulani, he would have become the president.
He was a middle belt Christian.
Useni was a victim of religious, tribal and regional sentiment and nepotism.

Rest in Peace to General Useni.
Exactly. Don't mind these naive Nigerians.

Another angle to the puzzle, l recalled that the PLO leader visited Abacha and conspiracy theories concluded that he shook Abacha hands with Juju and it led to his sickness, nawao, as at then, l was still in Kano state, Abachas house was in the same area l lived, Mehn, Julius Berger constructed plenty Bungalows hidden somewhere around Race course area of Kano, Abacha was indeed a DON of Money shocked
