The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) says only 6,000 consultants are left in the country.

Its President, Prof. Muhammad Mohammad, said this on Thursday during the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting in Ilorin.

Mohammad explained that 6,000 consultants remain as of February 2024, lamenting that data showed that about 1,300 left Nigeria in the last five years.

According to him, the number will continue to dwindle as the retirement age for medical consultants is 60 years.

“About 1,700 consultants are above 55 years of age.

“This means that in the next five years, they are going to leave the services for retirement,”
he said.

The MDCAN president emphasised that the number of consultants would continue to reduce, as long as the country produces only one or two per annum.

So you can see that the replacement cannot keep up with the loss from ‘Japa’ syndrome and from retirement,” he said.

Mohammad commended the government for its efforts toward finding solutions to the challenges.

Mohammad also appealed to the government at all tiers to ensure medical lectures are placed on the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), addressing disparities in their emoluments.

“We also want to have an environment where we will be able to practice and deliver the best quality healthcare in Nigeria,” he said

More are leaving this month, when security agents can just jump fence and attempt to abduct doctors, and you want them to stay in Nigeria doing what?

Your rich thieves and politicians no longer go to the hospitals, or fund healthcare to benefit health workers. They prefer to visit French hospitals when they have headache.

More will still leave until we are ready to stop deceiving ourselves, strap up and work with all honesty to salvage our nation.
Presently we have pushed the self destruct button and only dedicated hardworking leadership can avert the looming catastrophy

Re: Japa: Only 6,000 Medical Consultants Remain In Nigeria – MDCAN by Hemanwel(m):
I have said this before and I will say it again: there are some Biological Science and Life Science graduates out there who graduated with good grades, and wish to enroll into medical programs but do not have the wherewithal to achieve it. The federal government should consider sponsoring these ones to medical schools and condition them that they must practice here in the country upon their graduation.

If this report is actually true, then the government should come up with the policy without further delay; else, we have an impending health crisis

What do you expect?

When the peanuts they earn here in Nigeria can't sustain them anymore due to the rising inflation. Does the government expect them to keep enslaving themselves here under harsh working conditions when they're fully aware that they're in high demand abroad.

You obviously can't expect them to stay.

Instead of fixing healthcare, they let professionals leave in droves while we struggle with inadequate replacements. If things don’t change, the future of quality healthcare in Nigeria looks grim.

I remember how a clown on nairaland earlier today was hailing this government for promoting carpentry and tailoring over industrialisation. he even suggested less people study medicine so that we can generate more forex. Dude felt doctors were unimportant.

They are still plenty, according to Dr. Chris Ngige...!

Anyway, Canada and Middle East are still having shortages in specific areas of Medical specialties.

So, that 6,000 will be 3,000 by 2027. lipsrsealed

No, he won't!

Trump can do nothing to legal immigrants, especially those badly needed in specific sectors like Medicine and Science.

It's rascals who sneak into America through every route possible Trump is after...!

Do consultants look like people who need to illegally enter any country?!!

COMRADES, I don't blame anybody for this unfortunate thing, I blame the incompetent Tinubu for this. If he has been proactive right from day one, state of things wouldn't have deteriorated in the country like this

What a shame

*THE CLEAR MESSAGE* *FROM TRUMP*

God has blessed your country. Go back and hold your corrupt leaders accountable. Stop loitering the streets of America.

If Americans were docile and refused to initiate Revolution, then you would never see such an amazing nation like USA.

If France kept mum in 1775, you wouldn't see a developed nation like France.

If you like, keep playing tribal politics in suffering while your ruling class loot with reckless abandon.

Stop depending on WHO for subsidized drugs. At your age, you ought to have home-made drugs for common ailments. On that ground, America has left WHO.

Why must your country depend on the goodwill from WHO? Has God not blessed your country with professors of medicine, pharmacy, etc who could develop your nations hospitals?

Go and hold your ruling class accountable for rots in health care delivery. When they are sick, they run to USA for treatment with your national resources.

Keep playing tribal politics but get out of USA. If you're ready, you will take over your country from destiny destroying ruling class as they did in France.

All decent nations have accurate population index. Even in hell fire, God has a record of those in it. America belongs to Americans not indians, Nigerians, Chinese, Mexicans, and other nationals who want good life and escaped to USA.

We fought for liberty and advancement. Keep quiet and wait for angels to repair your bad roads. Remain dumb as ministers, Governors, commissioners, etc loot in trillions.

Return to your country and change the narratives. No more running to America with your heavily pregnant wives. You want them to give birth in America and automatically become citizens of America. That is revoked immediately.

Are you praying for God to fix your bad roads? Keep praying. Was it God that fix the roads you see in USA, France, UK, Canada, Saudi, etc? Remain in your country and face the rots. If you like allow electoral umpire to be under your corrupt Politicians. Allow them to keep rigging while your religious leaders sing to your ears that those rigged into power are "God's will for your country"!

If truly you are tired of your country, arise and face the rulling class squarely. The french people in their millions didn't fear the military. They all involved in the Revolution that gave birth to a New France.

Ohhhh, are you fasting to have stable electricity? Just continue. If you don't want to pay the price, why do you run to USA, France, Canada, etc for a better life? Remain in your country and enjoy the consequences of being docile.

The message is clear. Let it sink into the skulls of all those who desire a new Nigeria.

Copied...

Nigerians are deceiving themselves.

Why would I stay in Nigeria when UK pays me 50 to 100x what I can earn in Nigeria. (Ie if they no owe sef)
Plus all other factors.

If Nigerian politicians earn as little as what they pay us, themselves for japa.

Fix the problem and quit whining!

And this is not about patriotism. The first people you have responsibility for are your family.
