FG Considering Convertion Of Colleges Of Education To Universities - Minister by TimeManager(op): 12:34pm On Jan 29, 2025
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, said on Tuesday that the ministry was considering a proposal to convert all federal colleges of education in the country to Universities of Education.

Speaking at a budget defence before the joint House of Representatives Committees on Education, the minister said the move becomes necessary because many students no longer seek admission into Colleges of Education any more.

The minister revealed that despite budgetary allocation to the Colleges of Education, some of them have less than 1000 students.

“Do we need these colleges of education? They don’t exist in United States of America, and several other advanced countries. Let us convert them to universities of education,” he said.

On the 2025 budget proposal, the Minister said the budget is hinged on achieving major plank of President Bola Tinubu’s eight priorities which will be implemented through the ministerial deliverables of 2024-2027 in line with the education sector roadmap.

Alausa said the thrust for the year 2025 is anchored on ensuring “that we provide opportunities for children to return to school, make the teaching and learning environment safer, improve the capacity of teachers to deliver curricular that are contemporary and globally competitive and improve the capacity of our tertiary institutions to produce appropriate human resource base for our national development.”

He disclosed that at the moment there are 54 federal universities including 4 inter – university centres; 36 federal polytechnics; 32 federal colleges of education and 118 federal unity colleges divided into conventional; sciences; and science and technical currently being dedicated as technical.

According to Alausa, the 2025 education budget is N2.5 trillion comprising N348.3 billion for Ministry of Education; N816.7 billion for Parastatals; N226.7 billion for Polytechnics; N139.3 for Colleges of Education; N811.9 billion for Universities; N171.6 billion for Unity Colleges and N3.1 billion for UNESCO Paris.

Chairman of the House Committee on University Education and Chairman of the joint Committee, Abubakar Hassan Fulata said the committee will do everything within their constitutional power to avoid disruption of academic activities and improve the standard of education in Nigeria.

He said due to lack of sufficient fund to meet competing demands, the ministry and all relevant institutions should ensure proper and efficient utilization of the fund allocated for them.

Fulata warned against shunning invitations and summons by heads of MDAs, adding that the lawmakers carry out checks in line with the provisions of the constitution in order to ensure the MDAs are encouraged to do the right thing.

As funny as this may sound, this is the reality of today.

The basic education of Nigeria has improved to some extent especially towards the south. These days, it has reduced really seeing anyone celebrating they gained admission to polytechnics not alone COE. Coupled with the fact that universities are proliferating because of these politics of my state has more unis, my town must have cos I'm gov etc, with other reasons, most Colleges of education get minimal amount of students. Even some universities are struggling with enrollment and that's one major reason the cut off point is low compared to those days. If you don't bring it down, less than 2,000 might apply to a uni with carrying capacity of 8,000. Education facilities are becoming oversupplied.

It's just better to float everything to Unis because of increasing uni demand leading nowhere, create more jobs for people in the academic, but the graduates, Omo, how dem being won do market for them?

People no longer go to college or polytechnic because they have reduced university points to about 100, that is Jamb. So they better convert them to university of education or university of science and technology for the polytechnics

How would a university of education be different from a college of education from s name change perspective?
Why are they only concerned about the number of students and not other important things such as the curriculum, academic faculty strength, etc?
What proposal are they putting forth to ensure the academic faculty strength is improved? How are the institutions going to be funded considering the available universities are currently underfunded?
Abeg, his justification lacks merit.

See mumu government. What Nigeria needs are well equipped technical colleges. We are gravitating to handwork and skill, not degrees that are useless.

Polytechnics are like community college in USA.

He is right about not having college of education equivalent in USA.

However when he said University of Education, what does that even mean? Are they going to be providing only degrees in education or will be general all round degrees like normal universities?

What's ur own solution(s) to the problem?

He said, despite huge allocation to colleges, people dnt attend again, should we continue funding institutions with little or no benefits or what's way forward?

In other words, they want overcrowded campuses that will in turn decrease per capita allocation and further depreciation of value?

Then they should merge and close down redundant ones just like we've been advocating for the reduction/merger of the number of ministries and parastatals undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

Not by creating more universities.

The ones we have, are they managing it well?

Are we learning the basic things that we supposed learn in the university

Can Engineering students practice their proffesion by what was taught to them in the university without learning from illitrate artisan or undergoing a thorough treaning after school.

I wonder why we waste five years studying rubbish when suphiscated foreign schools spend less years with much more knowledge to impact on the students undecided

So the only alternative to underutilized is over crowded? Your mind does not accommodate the concept of optimization?

The idea of converting all Colleges of Education into Universities of Education might not be the best move for Nigeria, especially when we already have so many universities. The Colleges of Education are becoming redundant, with some having fewer than 1,000 students. Instead of turning them into universities, it might be more practical to either close them down or merge them with other Colleges of Education to streamline the system and make better use of resources. Expanding universities won’t solve the underlying issues of quality and relevance in education.
