Update from the ongoing construction of Awka mall.
It is good that the government is patnering with the private sector on this project! The Market Square brand has almost overtaken the ShopRite brand in the mass retail sector, they own the Kilimanjaro and Sundry Foods brands too! Can Soludo also deploy the same strategy to finish the Nnewi mall? I am not sure what is even holding the Nnewi mall but Soludo should knock heads together and finish that mall..............the completion of that mall will generate more jobs for the youth in that axis!

It will be interesting what that mall looks like. I think the best design of a walkable compact mall I have seen is the Enugu shopping mall built by the Artee Group.

The Nnewi mall was supposed to have roof parking to overcome space limitations which is tremendous extra cost. They should redesign it for a more spacious location.

Update on the Solution Innovation District Awka
I don't like when governments embark on a project or something that ordinarily supposed to be driven by the private sector like in the case of this innovation center. What is the purpose of this innovation center? Is it for all the tech entrepreneurs to rent office there and pioneer stuffs or what? Or is it just to create another office file repository for corrupt public officials?

The Silicon valley in CA I don't think it is the U.S government that built it.

Governments should rather give incentives to the private investors so that they can be encouraged to build things like this.

I really hope this project and building will truly serve the purpose for which all these spendings are being made. I will be watching!

What incentives can Anambra State Government give any investor to warrant him/her make the business decision of investing in such a capital - intensive project in the state? Have you forgotten that the entire SE is bereft of FG's infrastructure? Are physical infrastructures not a "sine qua non" for investment? You ought to know that there's a deliberate policy by the Nigerian System to stifle the SE and any state that wants to break out from the cocoon of underdevelopment has to bankroll every fund required for the project in question either from its own meagre resources or through Bank Loans.

Did you forget so soon that Buhari told some foreign donor agencies that any help they would want to give to Nigeria should be channelled towards the North as if it was only the North that needed deliverance? Was that not the FG trying to corner even foreign aids to the president's region at the detriment of other regions? Do you think that it wasn't the FG's policy that made Lagos the Center of Excellence? Outside the 2nd Niger Bridge, has the FG embarked on anything to improve the economic activities in the SE? The only thing the FG did was relocate all the security agencies to the SE where they mount Checkpoints at every 50 metres Interval collecting 200 Naira from motorists. Doesn't that create the impression of a hostile environment? Who would want to invest in such a restive environment?

The government of Soludo that is already taking the bull by the horns in providing the resources to, at the least, put one or two buildings in place should be heavily commended. If Soludo were to be waiting for foreign investors because, clearly, no local investor from the other regions wants to go to the SE for anything because of the "One Liegeria" they constantly preach, is it our Igbo brothers and sisters, who would prefer to bury every of their investments in all the other regions except theirs, we should be waiting for? Gov. Soludo did the right thing by starting the project and should be commended.

Kudos Soludo...Awka is beginning to rise and shine.........my only wahala with the pictures is the lack of an exit ramp from the high- speed Onitsha / Enugu highway to the entrance of the teaching hospital .................... the same mistake was made in designing the approach to the fun city entrance! Remedial action may save lives in the future!

Solar street light have been installed Billiy Nwokoye boulevard Awka. The reinstallation is happening almost everywhere in Anambra. This is sustainable considering the high cost of diesel for powering street lights.

Sustainable if you maintain them because their battery only last 3-4 years. Longer term, govt needs to do like most civilizations which is put all street lights and traffic lights on a special feeder with 24 hour guaranteed power.

Sometimes you ppl criticize blindly... It makes one think that trying to please u is like explaining ur self to someone committed to misunderstanding you.

Solar is a special feeder for Christ sake... The concern should be on changing the battery every 4years which to me is not a big deal compared to everyday diesel.

criticism is good na......iron sharpeneth iron! the biggest problem is that there has not been 24-hour public power in Nigeria for about 50 years~ strangely in Indiana where I leave in the US street lights are an exception ............even within most estates or subdivisions you only see street lights at junctions or roundabouts .............same on the streets ......even on highways within the city limits! they only light up strategic junctions and interchanges! Anyway, the lights from businesses and parking lots make up for the lack of adequate street lighting! we should go for what works for us and that we can maintain and sustain!

In the UsA The electricity company runs all street lights, traffic lights on a special feeder separate from commercial and residential with guaranteed 24 hour power. The street lights are nit cheap Chinese solar lights handed over to a contractor but world class to last 25 years.

ANSG could easily build a 1MW solar power plant or buy it from a power producer to run key public buildings, street lights, traffic lights for key roads in the capital and for Onitsha.

The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has accused police and military personnel of extorting a staggering ₦21.8 billion from roadblocks in the South-East geopolitical zone within two months.

According to a statement by the Chairman of Intersociety, Comrade Emeka Umeagbalasi, the police allegedly pocketed ₦15 billion, while the military netted ₦6.8 billion between December 2024 and January 2025.

Umeagbalasi described the Uga Junction and Atani Road Naval checkpoints in Onitsha, Anambra State, as the “most lucrative,” allegedly yielding over ₦600 million from extortion at gunpoint.

Umeagbalasi stated, “The deployed personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigeria Police Force in the South-East seized no less than ₦21.8 billion from civilians during the Christmas and New Year periods, under gunpoint extortion and related practices.”

The findings revealed at least 300 direct military roadblocks and 500 patrol teams in the region, with 98% involved in extortion. Each military roadblock reportedly collected an average of ₦100,000 daily, translating to ₦80 million daily or ₦2.4 billion monthly.

Police personnel manning about 2,500 roadblocks in the region allegedly raked in an average of ₦10.5 billion over two months, alongside ₦3.5 billion from barracks extortions and an additional ₦1 billion from other forms of corruption.

State-by-State Breakdown of Police Extortion

Imo State: ₦2.94 billion

Anambra State: ₦2.52 billion

Abia State: ₦2.1 billion

Enugu State: ₦1.68 billion

Ebonyi State: ₦1.26 billion

Umeagbalasi highlighted that the acts contravened Section 108 of the Armed Forces Act, which prescribes a 14-year jail term for military personnel involved in extortion, and Section 99 of the Criminal Code Act, which criminalizes police roadblock extortion with penalties of up to seven years in prison.

He urged the government to take immediate steps to curb these corrupt practices, enforce existing laws, and hold perpetrators accountable.

The koko is who pays for them.......Government should not tinker with systems they cannot afford to maintain and sustain! Solar-powered streetlights installed at key strategic points are the best value for Anambra now, so far the batteries are changed when due!

Let's think constructively. The reality is Soludo needs to improve his project planning, budgeting and management. The Amusement park in awka is over 2 years now. The reconstruction of the 3km Oby Okoli avenue is 2 years. The government house complex is over 3 years. It ahould not be but its because he is using an outdated method popular in Nigeria where you pay as money comes in rather than in bulk.

This is why infrastructure projects in Nigeria take decades. The second Niger Bridge was designed in 2004 or 2005 but no real work took place until 2017. That was because Uche Orji at the NSIA figured out a better funding model by seeking counterpart funding from development agencies and private investors in setting up the presidential infrastructure fund.

ANSG should have sought creative funding options for its projects. For example the Amusement Park really should be a PPP and designed 100% by experts not partly by ParkVega and Anambra govt officials. The government house complex should have been constructed in phases the way Abuja was when ministries were moved from Lagos to Abuja.

Anyways we can only pray that Soludo can complete these projects to a high quality standard.

Between me and you who spends more time on nairaland?. You have 1,205 posts since Jan 2022 or roughly 1 post every day.

I have 356 posts since Jan 2020.
