Yoruba Youths Oppose Sultan’s Support For Sharia In South-west by WaleBuraimoh(op): 9:14am On Jan 31, 2025
…Warn Against Cultural and Traditional Threats

The Yoruba Nation Youths, both in Nigeria and the diaspora, have issued a strong warning to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, against pushing for the establishment of Sharia courts in South-West states.

In a joint statement, Prophet Ayodele Ologunloluwa, Yoruba National Youth Leader (Diaspora), and Comrade Oyegunle Oluwamayowa Omotoyole, Homebase Leader, expressed concern over what they described as an attempt by the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) to impose Sharia law in the South-West, warning that it could destabilize the region.

They described the move as part of a broader agenda to “enslave and conquer” the Yoruba people. “We reject Sharia law or courts in Yoruba Land. This scheme is hypocritical and contrary to our culture, tradition, and lifestyle,” the statement read.

The youth leaders urged traditional rulers and governors in the region to resist the proposal, cautioning them against being deceived into supporting it.

The statement comes in response to a press release by the Deputy National Legal Adviser of the NSCIA, Imam Haroun Muhammad Eze, dated January 29, 2025, which advocated for the establishment of Sharia Arbitration Panels in Ekiti, Oyo, and other parts of the South-West. Eze cited Section 275 of the 1999 Constitution as a legal basis for Sharia Courts of Appeal, similar to Customary Courts of Appeal.

The Yoruba youths dismissed this justification as “laughable” and “suicidal,” stating that such a move would destabilize the region and lead to unrest.

They argued that the 12 Northern states where Sharia law is practiced have become characterized by poverty, corruption, terrorism, and instability. “Yoruba Land is distinct from the North, and Sharia law contradicts our culture and tradition,” they emphasized.

The youths warned that any attempt to establish Sharia courts in the South-West would be seen as a call for civil unrest. “We will resist it with our last blood. Sharia is alien to our culture, and it has no place in Yoruba Land.”

They urged the Governors and Traditional Rulers of the region to stand firm against the NSCIA’s proposal, stressing that peace and development in Yoruba Land must not be compromised.

Sharia law is constitutionally supported under Sections 5(f) and (g), its jurisdiction is restricted to civil matters involving Muslims. Section 277 of the Constitution further defines the scope of a state’s Sharia Court of Appeal.

The Nigerian Constitution explicitly addresses these concerns. The 1999 Constitution, as the supreme law, guarantees individual rights, including the freedom to practise any religion. Section 5(f), (g), and (h) permits states to establish courts based on common or customary law systems. In northern states, Sharia courts operate alongside customary and standard law courts, with Sharia appellate courts primarily addressing civil matters.

Section 277(1) of the Constitution outlines the jurisdiction of a state’s Sharia Court of Appeal:

The Sharia Court of Appeal of a state shall exercise appellate and supervisory jurisdiction in civil proceedings involving questions of Islamic personal law within its competence as outlined in subsection (2).
Subsection (2) details specific matters the court may decide, including marriage, inheritance, family relations, and guardianship, provided all parties are Muslims.

What you typed up there is an acute description of ignorance at it's peak.

The constitution only allows for shari'a law and court of appeal as allowed by states.

This law can only be passed by state legislature and assented by the governor.

Now, going to the supreme court for a purely legislative matter is just stupidity. The supreme court can not pass shari'a law for states. The court will send you back to your state house of assembly.

Now, I've not seen any babanla baba any state house of assembly member that will bring a bill for shari'a law in the SW. He risks not only loosing his political career but also his life!

Be guided. Stop peddling lies.

When u dine with the devil, even a long spoon cannot guarantee u won’t get burnt! Every single place & location that has allowed that religion in worldwide, is currently in turmoil. SW youths better gird up for the fight of their lives. Alone this time because their elders have managed to alienate them entirely from the rest of the South. It’s time to prove that Yoruba mettle, so we’re waiting to see Oro in action. His days have now been numbered by the same people he campaigned so hard for! cool
