In a major breakthrough against child trafficking, the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development (MYSD), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, has successfully rescued five children who had been sold into illegal custody. The coordinated operation led to the arrest of members of a notorious child trafficking syndicate, bringing an end to their illicit activities.

Following a press conference held at the Nigeria Police Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Lagos Island, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, via a statement on his social media handles described the operation as a defining moment in his tenure.

“These are the days we live for – the days that give true meaning to public service and fuel my passion for this responsibility,” he declared, reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable children.

According to DCP Ajao S. Adewale’s briefing, “On the 8th of January, 2025, an intelligence report on the activities of a notorious child trafficking syndicate was received by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan, Lagos. The intelligence revealed that this syndicate specializes in buying and selling newborn babies, toddlers, and children of various ages.”


The syndicate, as disclosed by the police, comprised:

– Sunday Okputu – Supplier of the trafficked
Chroma
– Ibezim Chioma (F) – A middlewoman who canvassed for buyers
– Chinasa Echelibe (F) – A caregiver employed to tend to the children before their final delivery to buyers

The five children rescued from the syndicate’s custody were identified as:

1. Marvelous Obi (Male) – 1 year old
2. Promise Ifekwuna (Male) – 3 years old
3. Somtochukwu Onyemaechi (Male) – 1 year old
4. Chibuzornma Onyemaechi (Female) – 3 years old
5. Praise Chuckwudi Ibezim (Male) – 6 years old



The rescued children have been placed under the protective custody of the Lagos MYSD, where they will receive comprehensive care, counseling, and rehabilitation. Ogunlende commended the Nigeria Police Force for their swift and decisive action, emphasizing that the Lagos State Government remains resolute in its fight against child/human trafficking and exploitation.

“This victory is more than just a rescue – it is a strong message to all Lagosians that we remain committed to protecting our youth, upholding their rights, and fostering true development across our society. We are proactive, we are vigilant, and we will continue to stand against all threats to the well-being of our children and the future of Lagos,” Ogunlende stated.

The Lagos State Government, through the MYSD and security agencies, reassured residents that efforts to combat human trafficking and safeguard vulnerable children will remain a top priority.
