Nigerians Defend Corrupt Leaders Yet Complain About Corruption – Olukoyede by ogododo(op): 3:16pm On Feb 01, 2025
The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, says Nigerians condemn corruption yet rally behind corrupt leaders when they are being prosecuted.

Olukoyede said underdevelopment would be a thing of the past if every citizen sees corruption as a common enemy.

Everybody is crying that Nigerians are corrupt, that the system is corrupt; that corruption is killing us and destroying our system,” he said while receiving officials of the Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC), led by Chris Olukolade, on Friday in Abuja.

According to Olukoyede, collaboration and synergy with the CCC will boost strategic communication and public engagement, adding that public support is crucial to the EFCC’s success.

He stated the EFCC will partner to raise public awareness on its activities and the importance of integrity among Nigerians.

When we investigate high profile cases and arraign people in court, the same people will carry placards and be supporting corrupt leaders. It doesn’t show that we are serious about this fight. The fight is supposed to be a collaborative effort.

“No single agency can do it alone. It is practically impossible for us as EFCC to fight all the battles. The society has a role to play; policy has a role to play and the issue of welfare of the citizens has a role to play.”

The EFCC boss also spoke on the trajectory of his leadership, saying he has prioritised prevention over enforcement since coming on board.

Besides prevention, the EFCC boss identified the leveraging of intelligence gathering in the work of the Commission as being instrumental to some of the recent mind-blowing successes of the Commission.

“Now we are laying more emphasis on prevention which is a critical aspect of our mandate. We don’t have to always be waiting for money to be stolen before we start working in EFCC. To drive prevention, I established a new directorate called Fraud Risk Assessment and Control, FRAC and now we are doing more of blocking of the leakages.

“We have access to GIFMIS (government payment platform). We want to track and see where every money, released is going. We want to ensure that every capital project is executed. With prevention, we discovered that there will be less to enforce.

“We are not dropping our mandate on enforcement. As a matter of fact, we are scaling it up. But we believe that it is important for us to prevent because it costs less to prevent than to react when the deed must have been done. So that is one of our areas of focus as of now.”

Exactly. Those leaky leaky bum bum who supported Jonathan inspite of saying "stealing is not corruption" have turned a 180° edge morally to start demanding it from APC. The APC leaky leaky bum bum guys today will gladly ask you to hold your governor accountable to avoid their paymasters being held accountable.

Yes na, if you want them to defend your corrupted ways, give the 5kg bag of rice and 1 liter cooking oil and watch them shout Sia baba to your name. Some will even stand on your mandate gidigba, as long as you punish them with frustrating policies. Nigerians are anti-good government.

Re: Nigerians Defend Corrupt Leaders Yet Complain About Corruption – Olukoyede by ValarDoharis:
You're too dumb!

Stealing is not corruption but stealing is stealing.

If someone steals your yam and you start shouting that the person is corrupt, nobody will help you catch the thief unless you call him a thief. Jonathan was only reechoing what a Judge said that corruption cases drag on for long because prosecutors try to prove there was corruption in a clear case of stealing. Prosecutors should be proving that there was stealing and not call it corruption

The EFCC chairman have tried his best. Those condemning him are just been tribalistic, nepotistic and political.
Those Nigerians that defend corrupt leaders but complain about corruption are so much on this forum especially on first page of any corruption scandal.
When the authorities arrest and prosecute these corrupt leaders these set of people rally behind them calling their arrest political and crying the authorities are witch hunting.

It's basically Yoruba that do this.

What olu Kayode said is true, though he refused to name tribes or zones that do it often...

Nigerians are a reflection of the political leaders.

They love to shift blame and always fail to realise that they are part of the problem.

Every adult man or woman is a leader in their own right by the way. All fathers and mothers are examples of leaders, so if you raise kids you can not feed, you are corrupt and selfish.

Very true
You can see from the amount of people that claim to be obidient. The way they defend their master you can imagine what will happen if efcc follow up his Pandora issues

Is stealing not different from corruption?

Has corruption worsened or not since APC change 10 years ago, as reflected in higher debts but lower economic growth and higher unemployment plus inflation?

The fact remains that.

The joke is also on you, sir. With all the your noise and bragging, yaya bello was eventually released. I thought he would have been prosecuted by now. The day you show seriousness in dealing with the corrupt politicians, masses will have a different mindset about corruption.

I'm not a fan of Nigeria political science majors called politicians but I'm more surprised that folks whose lives are affected by the stupid decisions of the very idiots called Nigerian politicians will still go length to type long writs to defend them.

I'm not enthusiastic about Nigerian politicians one bit and it will remain so till death wave a nigga home.

They still have immunity from arrest. EFCC has no right to arrest them. When their tenure ends the immunity has ended.
That is why they start mastering the plan of how to jet out of the country few days before handover to another government
