I disagree with you. The Yoruba adage says because you have never been to another person's farm, doesn't make your father's farm the best. Let's not generalise our ideas because it could be misleading. Until after marriage, every outing, lunch dates etc should be split 50/50. Because the Bible says it is the duty of a man to provide for his wife, not girlfriend.
