Well its not useless at all because there are many who rely on it and it works perfectly well. Why i mentioned that my neighbour's experience is because it highlight's the will and choice we have to make in life which we will be held accountable by the One who made us one day. It is a mind thing true but the mind has to make a choice based on the kind of information it has. Even the Buddhist's too fall despite their celibacy because it is a human weakness to want to fall into sexual sin. However there is enough power to overcome in the Grace provided by God. It has happened to me several years ago. I agree with you that the young man who would hurt himself to curtail his body was engaging in sadistic sadomachism albeit unknowingly but the Grace is still there. It works for those who believe in it and obey it.
