A fridge/freezer can be opened from inside so getting out shouldn't have been a problem. An autopsy will hopefully show whether they died before being placed in the freezer.

My freezer has a power lock. When you close it you cannot open it immediately until after a few minutes. So if someone locks himself inside and is unable to open it, it only takes a few seconds for the oxygen inside the crammed space to become poisonous carbon dioxide which would be deadly for anyone inside.
