Niger Republic Orders Red Cross Out Of Country by zero8zero(op): 11:53am On Feb 06, 2025
The ruling military junta of Niger Republic has ordered the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC, to immediately leave the country.
The West African country, which recently withdrew from ECOWAS, has also terminated its agreements with the ICRC.

It was gathered that and some foreign staff have started leaving the country after the organisation closed its office in the capital, Niamey, on Tuesday.

According to Nigerien media, the government had ordered the closure of the humanitarian group’s offices and the immediate departure of foreign staff.

No reason was given for the decision.

DAILY POST reports that the Red Cross had been working in Niger since 1990, recently focusing on aid for victims of years of violence by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

The Sahel nation’s military ruler, since taking power in a coup in July 2023, has made national sovereignty a rallying cry.

The junta has chilly relations with former colonial ruler France, instead forging ties with fellow juntas in Burkina Faso and Mali as well as with Russia.

In January, interior minister, General Mohamed Toumba, said the government was taking important measures to ensure the monitoring and supervision of NGOs and development organisations.

“Our investigations have indicated there are many NGOs that are in close association with certain partners that are bringing us war… through their support to the terrorists,” he said.

Niger previously banned French humanitarian NGO Acted and local non-profit APBE in November, withdrawing their licenses.

The French NGO had been working in the impoverished country since 2009, notably tending to people displaced by jihadist violence.

Since the coup, Niger’s authorities have expelled both the French and US soldiers fighting against the region’s jihadist threat, as well as the French ambassador.

UNRWA has been accused of funding Hamas, ICRC has been accused of funding terrorists. The Chief of Defense has also alleged some NGOs as financiers of terrorism, Nigeria should look inwards too and boot out any foreign NGOs complicit.

It's just a matter of time before the government collapse. Military govt always act before they think. I hope they know what they are doing?

People in Africa think that if the US leaves them alone, they’ll realize their full potential and develop on their own. No, you become vulnerable for countries in the Middle East and other parts of the world to invade and forcefully exploit your resources.

The world has never been peaceful, it has always been war and invasion, the US dominance brought some order. All you had to do for your sovereignty was practice democracy, obey some rules, and don’t loot resources that could’ve developed your country while blaming it on them

Those foreign NGOs are fronts for the CIA to destabilize countries, they organise colour revolutions and regime change operations through terrorists while pretending neutrality.
Billions of dollars funneled to terrorists by USAID through Red Cross and Red Crescent, meanwhile America doesn't allow NGOs that receive funding from abroad to function in America under the Foreign Agents Act which classifies NGOs as intelligence espionage organisations but they go around creating chaos in other countries

Omo, this one na serious matter o! Pushing out the Red Cross just go make things harder for the people wey need help the most—IDPs, wounded people, and those facing hunger. If no be them, who go provide that kind humanitarian support?

Security-wise, e fit even make sense for terrorists because when people dey suffer, dem fit easily fall for recruitment. Plus, with all the Western countries and NGOs pulling out, Niger go just isolate itself more, and na dem go suffer am pass.

Economy no go smile too—jobs wey NGOs provide go disappear, and foreign aid go reduce. The way the junta dey go, e clear say dem wan cut off from Western influence, but e fit backfire if dem no get better backup plan.

Since the coup Niger has been tough on the French men, If things don't go as it should for the leader it could be a terrible mistake for the Niger people in future. However Red cross leaving the nation is something to ponder about how much money they spend on the organisation and the impact the department makes in the country.
