Nigerian lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has petitioned the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union to impose a visa ban on Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

In a letter addressed to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and shared on his Facebook page, Adeyanju accused ACP Adejobi of repeatedly cracking down on freedom of speech in Nigeria. The petition alleges that Adejobi has used his position to suppress dissent, facilitate unlawful arrests, and enable police brutality.

The letter cites multiple incidents, including the alleged arrest and detention of activist Olamide Thomas, TikToker Destiny Ekhourutomwem, and Nigerian citizen Uche Ihedioha over social media posts critical of the government. Adeyanju claims that Adejobi’s actions violate democratic principles and human rights standards.

"We have petitioned the US, UK, Canada & EU to place a visa ban on Police PRO Muyiwa Adejobi and members of his family for his numerous crackdowns against freedom of speech in Nigeria," Adeyanju wrote. "We will take other constitutional steps against him and other anti-democratic elements."

The petition calls for immediate action, urging Western governments to restrict Adejobi and his family from traveling to their countries, similar to previous sanctions imposed on officials accused of human rights violations.

As of now, ACP Adejobi has not publicly responded to the allegations. The development has sparked debates on social media, with many Nigerians weighing in on the matter.

See nonsense request. Na by force for the PRO to travel outside the country? If God bless him with good health, he may not have any reason to travel out except may be for vacation. You hardly see northerners attacking their people like this but you see southerners, they are always quick to bring their people down. I'm not exonerating the lawlessness of the Police force but most of these activists are self centered and not being sincere

Politics has blinded some of you guys, you can't even think like a normal human being anymore, freedom of speech is sacrosanct account to the constitution of Nigeria, no law criminalising freedom of speech in Nigeria is valid, if anybody defames you, kindly go to the court and initiate a civil procedure, the police are fighting free speech in Nigeria and if left unchallenged one day you will be too afraid to say the president of Nigeria is corrupt because you will be thrown into jail.
