A viral video showing police officers in Akwa Ibom State assaulting a pregnant woman over the enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy has sparked widespread outrage across the state, News360 Nigeria reports.

Reports indicate that the officers involved in the incident are suspected to be from the Itam Police Division. In the disturbing footage, the woman, allegedly an insurance defaulter, is seen being dragged by the officers until she collapses on the ground.

A Facebook user, Mayor Sylvester, condemned the act, expressing frustration over the police’s handling of the situation.

“This is what the Itam Police Station in Akwa Ibom State has turned the third-party insurance issue into. They are now acting like animals. These are the kind of irresponsible characters recruited into the force. Imagine how a pregnant woman is being rough-handled. I just hope her baby is still alive,” he wrote.

He further suggested a better approach to enforcing vehicle insurance policies, saying, “If the police want to ensure every vehicle has third-party insurance, why not assign representatives from insurance companies to police checkpoints? That way, defaulters can easily renew their insurance on the spot instead of facing such brutality.”

No Official Response from Police

Despite the video trending online for over 16 hours, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the incident. Efforts to contact the Commissioner of Police, CP Bala Mohammed Azare, and the Command’s spokesperson, Tifon John, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the excessive use of force by the officers attracted a crowd of sympathizers, with many in the background questioning why the police had to resort to such violence.

Nigeria police men are mostly animals in uniform, worse than anything in creation.
Even chimpanzees in the wild won't assault pregnant females of their kind, not to talk of lions, tigers, leopards which are pure CARNIVORES.
Some humans are lower than animals in behaviour.

Lawless Animal Society for a reason.
See the country DaddyFreeze dey encourage diasporans to return kom meet.
Say Nigeria don better. 4me Nigeria was never this bad, not even during the military.
During the military there was law and order.
Just see Lawlessness & senselessness everywhere
Peak of Lawlessness. This is the reason we are the loudest in diaspora.

I was thinking it is poverty that drives Nigerians into such until I visited Uganda.
Ugandans are very poor. Exchange rate is like $1 = 3000, yet see the serenity among them. No single Lawlessness across their airports. Ethiopians are far poorer than Nigerians, yet no single airport staff at Bole' airport would stop to demand bribe or coerce you. Dey don't have ur time at their airports. Everything moves so fast.

Nigerian security agents are only active when facing civilians.

Call then when there is robbery going on. You won't see them.

This is highly condemnable. In Lagos for example the police need no stress the people over insurance policy because the eagle eyes cameras everywhere detects vehicles without insurance policies and get fined. Other states should tow similar path, at least it will prevent the this kind of harassment and in a way increase their IGR.

Besides, genuine 3rd party insurance is 15k with NIID verification. This is what I do!

For the benefit of those who have no idea of what 3rd party insurance covers. It is a compulsory insurance for motorists in Nigeria that pays compensation for damages done to other people's (3rd party) vehicles or properties to the tune of 3 million and an unlimited amount in case your vehicle kills another person.
And all you need to get covered is your vehicle's licence details, your valid ID and your 15k thereafter you have your policy in minutes.

In case of accident, all you need to do is to notify your insurance company and they will pay the damages you caused upon submission of required documents.

When Kemi said the Police stole her brother 's shoes, online defenders blamed her for casting aspersions on her country of birth.
Just imagine the nonsense.

If a person can treat a woman with an innocent baby inside her like this, how will he treat ordinary person?

Mental health certificate should be a must for joining any force in Nigeria.
