Hardship: Most Govs Live Permanently In Abuja, NLC Laments by ogododo(op): 7:50am On Feb 11, 2025
THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday lamented that most governors abandon their states and live permanently in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, while the people they were supposed to govern are facing hardship.

President of the NLC, Mr. Joe Ajaero, stated this in what appeared to be a town hall meeting with workers at the NLC Secretariat, Lokoja, Kogi State.

The NLC leadership is in Kogi State to deliver and commission 10 Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, buses provided to the state chapter of the congress to ease transportation problems.

The town hall meeting was organised primarily for the workers to present their problems and demands to the NLC leadership, so the matters could be taken to the governor.

Ajaero, who noted that the leadership had visited five zones, regretted that the governors were always absent, having travelled to Abuja.

While stressing that workers were feeling the heat of the harsh economic realities, with the high cost of living, Ajaero said for government to contemplate increasing tariff on telecom, was pushing workers too far.

He said the leadership would take to the governor the problems and demands workers reeled out, even as he said of the five zones visited, it was only in one the governor was around.

Ajaero said: “However, there is a problem we are having in trends because most governors are now living permanently in Abuja. We have moved to about five zones, Kogi is about the fifth zone. We have met governors in only one state. Each time you go there, they are in Abuja and this is affecting governance.

“I think we should be able to manage the center and the units, so people will have the feeling of democracy, the dividend of democracy, so that people can talk to their leaders.

“So if we capture all these things, the information you are going to give us will be conditional if the governor is around. If he’s around, we will convey your information to him. If he’s not around, whosoever he’s going to send, we pass it to him.”

He said that Kogi State was strategic to the Congress because it had union leaders as governor and deputy, adding that Governor Usman Ododo was one of his officials in Niger State and the deputy, an official of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT.

He said: “So, we want to make this as a town hall meeting to listen to you to know what has been done and what has not been done properly, so we take it to them.

“To us, it is like home coming. We want to come and interact with them to find out whether they are doing those things we are criticising others for.”

On the proscription of labour unions in state-owned tertiary institutions by Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration, the NLC President, who expressed surprise that such thing exists in the state, said the state government lacked the right to proscribe unions under the exclusive legislative list.

He said: “Let me say here, union practice falls under the Exclusive Legislative List in the Constitution. No governor has powers to ban them, you don’t ban what you don’t have control over. Unions are registered nationally by the registrar of trade unions. For administrative convenience, they may choose to have branches in states, so what are you now banning?”

Earlier, the workers told the NLC President that over 10 years, the Kogi State Polytechnics, Kogi State University, the State Colleges of Education, Technology and Nursing had been under proscription by the state government.

Other demands workers wanted the intervention of the NLC were non- implementation of annual salary increase, non-provision of housing for workers, as well as shortage of teachers in primary and junior secondary schools, among others.

In this life, avoid one thing at all costs. This thing is very bad and evil. It will destroy your life furthermore, if you do it again. You'll keep on prolonging the development of your mental and physical well being, if you indulge in this act again. Some of you will be prolonging the benefits your parents should be getting, from bringing you into this world, if you repeat this dastardly act. Some of you will keep on dropping your account details, on the comment section of every celebrity on social media, if you do it again. Do not vote for Tinubu come 2027. A word is enough for the wise.

huh 95% of Nigerian’s problem is caused by governors but everyone wants to blame the President….

Nigeria will only get better when we as citizens hold our governors accountable for their actions from local government level…

There is no governor that can't be replaced with lines of codes in the world we are today but for some reason we need someone to look up at like the snake on the stick depicted somewhere in the Bible, these people don't do anything heck most government worker in the federation don't do didly squat! They just go to office, hail oga, talk about their problems, plan new ways to collect runs money, sabotage progress and go back home to thier family only to wake up the next day and repeat for 40 years ... We need an ELON to drain the MFing SWAMP!

Re: Hardship: Most Govs Live Permanently In Abuja, NLC Laments by braxjay(m):
10 CNG Buses for a whole community is laughable.

I recently visited Kogi State and stayed in a town called Kabba. I explored several places, including Ogali community and Falele. Kogi State has the potential to become one of the richest states in Nigeria due to its abundant limestone resources, which is why Dangote established a cement factory there to access raw materials easily.

However, the corruption, greed, and selfishness of politicians could cause significant harm to the economy. I have to restrain myself from using derogatory words about Nigeria.

With the right leadership and commitment to good governance, the state can overcome challenges like corruption and political greed, paving the way for significant economic growth and prosperity. I remain hopeful for a brighter future for Nigeria.

The states Governors are the core reasons behind why the people are poor and jobless...

Not T-pain... The people should start revolution from there states..

Not at Federal level... The elected Governors are thieves... Just them and there close associates... Every other person's should go to hell...

That's why he doesn't give a damn about what happens in his state. The only people who support him on this forum are worthless agbadorians.

Very certain and evident. Even the president increasing the tarrifs dont understand what the common man is suffering. Funds are raised from the common man for the senator, house of reps. ministers and government agencies to spend but non of their salaries and budgets have been reduced, as the masses are sacrificing.

Think deeply on what the NLC leader said, instead of running away from reality.
The Truth has been well spoken by the NLC President - Ajaero and he got this right 👍
- when they ( the governor s)need votes- is it Abuja that will vote them,
Or is Abuja their State?
So when would their States People enjoy the Dividends of Democracy?
We have continuously informed Nigerians, that Your State Governors are Emperors and all the State Resources are with them but coming to residing in Abuja now and then, shows they have nothing for the Citizens!
Very Shameful Indeed!

I heard imo state governor is always in Abuja.

Yahaya belloh did same thing.

How then shall they have first experience of what is going on in the state?
You see people with no interest of governance at heart being manipulated into offices through the faulty electoral process
