And they informed and propagate that Warri and Port Harcourt refinery is working, why importing that much............

By Abdullateef Aliyu

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) imported 136.7 million litres of premium motor spirit (PMS) in a single day as importation of refined petroleum products persists, Daily Trust can report.

A document sighted by Daily Trust showed that the product arrived into the country on Monday, 10th February.

This is just as checks by Daily Trust Tuesday showed that fuel prices came down marginally at some filling stations in Lagos with a litre going as low as N925 per litre.

Daily Trust reports that large scale importation of refined petroleum products continued despite Nigeria’s local refining capacity through the revived government refineries in Port Harcourt and Warri as well as private refineries like the $20bn Dangote Refinery.

In December 2024, the NNPC announced the resumption of refining operation for the 125,000 barrels per day (bpd) Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC).

This came a few weeks after Port Harcourt Refinery was also said to have resumed refining operations after decades of inactivity.

Motor Tanker vessels report document reviewed by our correspondent indicated that NNPCL spent over N126.5 billion to import more than 136.7 million litres of PMS in a single day.

The motor tanker vessels report which tracks the cargo tanks entering the country, indicated that NNPCL imported 102,000 metric tonnes of PMS on Monday, 10th February which roughly translates to 136,782,000 litres of petrol.

The products were imported through Lagos ports. The document showed that 37,000 metric tonnes were transported by the Kriti Bay and Kouris ships via the ASPM terminal, while another 28,000 metric tonnes were brought in by the Hapnia Andre ship through the PWA/BOP/NOJ terminal.

At the current N925 landing cost, NNPCL would have spent N126,523,350,000 to import the petrol in a single day, despite recent claims that the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries had resumed refining operations.

Some stakeholders and industry players said Nigeria should not be importing this much if truly the government refineries are now working.

“Besides why are we importing this much when our daily consumption is just 30 million litres. We really need to probe this to really have a true picture of what is happening,” a source said.

Another industry player said, “There is a lot that is not true. You all don’t question anything coming from the refineries. You think everything is true?

Meanwhile checks by Daily Trust yesterday indicated that fuel prices are easing at some filling stations with MRS selling the cheapest at N925 per litre.

MRS is in partnership with Dangote Refineries which recently reduced its ex-depot price from N950 to N890 per litre.

Apart from MRS, Mobil also reduced its price from N960 to N940; SGR at N953.

A commercial driver, Ajani Monsuru, who spoke with our correspondent said the reduction is not significant, adding that motorists would only see relief when fuel prices crash below N900.

May surprise many:

United States imports Refined Petroleum primarily from: Canada ($15.5B), South Korea ($5.93B), Mexico ($5.52B), India ($4.87B), and Russia ($4.73B). The fastest growing import markets in Refined Petroleum for United States between 2021 and 2022 were Canada ($5.07B), Mexico ($2.64B), and Saudi Arabia ($2.4B).

In February 2025, the Dangote refinery exported two cargos of jet fuel to Saudi Aramco. The consignment was about 130 million liters.

And you think the Saudi Aramco would have bought jet fuel from Dangote if it wasn't functioning.

Even countries with the biggest refineries still import fuel.

The United States has the largest refineries in the world, but still imports petroleum, including crude oil, gasoline, and diesel, from many countries, including Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Brazil.

Just because NNPC imports doesn't mean Dangote Refinery is not working.

I think this is a norm in the industry. If Saudi Arabia ARAMCO can import from Dangote.

Aramco operates one of the world's largest refining businesses, with gross refining capacity of 7.1 mmbpd as at December 31, 2022

Oga our daily demand is 30million liters per day. how do you explain this when Dangote refined products are in the market? You cannot use what US does to justify this BS. Have some conscience and fear God. It is better you were quiet than trying to justify this BS.

Heeyyyyy hold one there before you start saying rubbish. The importation is due to several reasons, it could be that the quality produced by Dangote can be bought to be blended in their facility.
The issue here is the opaque nature of NNPC's dealing with respect to importation. How do you justify this that we have 30million liters per day demand currently and assuming Dangote fulfils one quarter of the demand, it doesn't justify the huge volumes NNPC is importing.

They are doing so to help T-Pain crash the price of petrol as promised more than two years ago. Asiwaju must be very embarrassed about his failure to achieve that objective despite three local refineries producing fuel for several months now.

Do you think it is the same pattern of failure with the forex market where he has also failed to crash the price of dollars to N300 in the short term as promised and despite borrowing billions from Afreximbank against future crude sales?

The failure of 25 years plus master plan in Lagos has been elevated to federal level. O ma se o embarassed

Deltafirstson:
Although the pump price of fuel was N197 when President Bola Tinubu took over on May 29, 2023, the product now sells for N617 per litre – less than two months after.

In his inaugural address, Tinubu announced that subsidy was gone, fulfilling a promise that all leading presidential candidates made during the campaign.

However, pump price of fuel hit N537 per litre days after Tinubu ended subsidy.

On Tuesday, the price climbed further to N617, a development that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) attributed to “market forces”.

Nigerians have been lamenting the hardship occasioned by fuel price hike. Amid the lamentation, a video where Tinubu campaigned to slash the price of fuel went into circulation.

Checks by Daily Trust affirmed the authenticity of the video uploaded on the YouTube page of Channels Television.

At his campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu spoke on a number of issues, but those of fuel scarcity and naira redesign made the headlines.

However, Tinubu who spoke in Yoruba language, also assured the crowd that though people were saying petrol price would hit N200, it would be reviewed downward under him.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200 per litre. Go and relax, we will bring it down,” he had said in the 7th minute of the video.

King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, a Fuji musician who performed at the rally, interrupted the president’s speech with chants as the crowd cheered.

On the campaign podium with the president were Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Pa Bisi Akande, interim National Chairman of the APC; Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President; Senator Gbenga Daniel; among other bigwigs of the ruling party.

Tinubu went further to say Nigerians would defy the acute fuel scarcity at the time and trek to cast their votes.

“The great Nigerian youths, the great Nigerian students, the confident Nigerian youths. This is a revolution. This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel price will increase and reach N200/N500 per litre. Go and relax, we will crash the prices,” he had said.

Saudi Aramco also has blending facilities, so it make business sense for them to import and blend to have a suitable quality to see. And who says they would also not export the blended product?

So where is NNPC getting the funds to fund fuel importation and to rehabilitate 4 refineries simultaneously? I support Tinubu's floating of oil prices.......... without proper cost recovery and investment interest how can a sector survive and thrive! In my view this coupled with the floating of the exchange rate is Tinubu's best policy so far but the guy is frittering the gains away with his tinwa tinwa and amala politics!

Tinubu is no nationalist nor statesman his tribal-based politics is his albatross!
