The South East Development Commission (SEDC) is targeting $200 billion regional economic growth by 2035, according to Mark Okoye, its managing director. Okoye, in his inaugural speech on Wednesday, projected a 400 percent growth from the current $40 billion within the next decade. The senate had confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s nominees for the North West Development Commission and SEDC on January 14. Tinubu signed the development commission bills into law on July 24, 2024, enabling the region to receive funds for project execution. Okoye said the SEDC’s inauguration marks the beginning of the region’s reconstruction, 54 years after the civil war. He acknowledged the enormous task ahead, citing the World Bank’s requirement of a $10 billion annual investment for 30 years to bridge the infrastructure gap in south east. The managing director said the region faces challenges such as a harsh investment climate, 2,500 active erosion sites, low ease of doing business, and unemployment. Okoye assured that the commission will rely on Tinubu’s support, governors of the five states, the private sector, and strategic partnerships to achieve economic goals. Also, he said the commission has studied past regional development blueprints, including the visionary economic plans of Michael Okpara, which laid the groundwork for the region’s industrial and agricultural potential. “Despite these obstacles, we remain a resilient and enterprising people, it is now up to us to shape the South-East we envision within the framework of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Okoye said. “Working with the state governments, private sector ecosystem, and development partners, we will drive the South-East towards a $200 billion regional economy by 2035. “We will not pay lip service to development, SEDC will prioritise action over rhetoric and results over promises.” THE SEDC WILL PRIORITIZE SECURITY, INVESTMENT Okoye said the commission would prioritise security and investment, infrastructure development, agriculture, industrialisation, technology, innovation, and human capital development. “Our tenure will be built on transparency, accountability, and public participation, every project will align with a clear roadmap and deliver measurable impact,” he said. “In the coming months, we will embark on several projects, programmes, and initiatives designed to accelerate the development of our region.” The managing director appreciated Tinubu for his belief in him and his colleagues. He also thanked the national assembly for its role in passing the SEDC bill into law, as well as its nominations and subsequent confirmation. Also speaking, Emeka Wogu, the chairman of the commission board, stated that the SEDC’s goal is to contribute to the region’s overall development through high-value projects and creating jobs for thousands of youths.https://www.thecable.ng/south-east-development-commission-targets-200bn-regional-economy-in-10years/

This is quite an ambitious target, $200b in 10years. If you ask me why I'm screaming, you may soon find out. As I was saying, this could be likened to "project rebuilding the SE". Going by the figures in the article, SE economy is currently at $40b, which means the plan is to increase the GDP by 20%, an average of 2% a year. The FG's projection is a $1trillion GDP by 2030. That's a 5year plan ( medium), compared to SouthEast's $200b in 10years, which could be estimated at $100b in 5years. Therefore, in 5years, SE is projecting a 10% of Nigeria's total GDP in 5years, that's quite ambitious, bro. To settle pretty well into this, the start off approach has to be holistic, aggressive and effective. First off, the economic activities in the SE has to kick back up, which literary means that the unending sit at home has to come to an end immediately before other set goals will have to follow. Investment in the SE is absymally low both for local and FDI, that would have to improve and accelerated by every means necessary, more internet penetration, more bankable residents, and all of that, inorder to spread inclusivity to the far remote areas. More importantly, the larger majority have to change and redirect their mindsets towards Government's projects. The negative insinuations motivated by political colouration have to be reduced to the minimal. An instance where some group of people describe a costal project connecting the neighbouring SS states as an highway to fraud, is nothing but absolutely ridiculous. A $200billion regional economy will encourage as much as possible any infrastructural projects as massive as the coastal road project that will potentially open up the SE region to more economic attraction. Pls, you need to stop the pessimism about the project henceforth. Then again, the SEDC board must be independent off the whims and caprices of the Governors. There will be a hell amount of pressure to embezzle and to share around some funds but they need to grow some ball of steel. The NASS members who nominated them will also be having a thirsty throat, wielding their power to remove and reshuffle the membership if they don't play ball. I hope they will be able to handle all of these in the interests of the people. Hopefully, the new kids on the block (SEDC members) will prove to be different from the old salt ( the Governors). |

Afrobasic:A two-hundred regional economy in the SE is a very realistic goal. The SE has four key resources: people, land, gas, and oil. The development of an industrial-size refinery and LPG/LNG infrastructure will be valued at $50 billion to the SE. The LNG/LPG will open up an electricity power plant, petrochemical plants, and chemical plants(Ammonia, Methanol, Sythenic Ethnol), another $50 billion. Textiles, shoes, palm oil, cassava, and other light industries will be added. With the right investment, leadership, and people. The SE, despite all its failing, has a reasonable literacy rate of over 85% UTM Offshore is already building an FLNG in Akwa Ibom led by an Igbo man who raised $5 billion from Afrimbank. The political leadership should coordinate the Igbo entrepreneurs in Nigeria and in the diaspora to be part of the programme. |

This is great and obviously very possible, as well as necessary because by that time 200bl will be 'normal'. Here are things I would like to see done. 1. Regional rail: GDP is based on what a region can 'handle', and we have hit the limit of what can be done without rail and sea access. 200bl means someone will move products at a volume that roads cannot handle 2. Human Resource Development with focus on digital and health: Focus on industries that are not import export dependant and industries who's actors are not bound by geography. Historically Igboland has made most of its money from human skills (boat making, iron work, gun smithing, shrine building, surgery, medicine) 3. Brain Accumulation: Policies that invite the most well educated Nigerians to the region. Incentives for people who hold doctorates and master's degrees regardless of ethnicity, and benefits for businesses that higher high skill labor. People who work in advance fields tend to build second businesses outside of work so this has a multiplier effect, and it makes the region the choice of high skills investment. 4. Spread apprenticeship program: Outside of traders and businessmen, others need to be incentivized towards becoming a part of the system. All doctors, nurses, engineers, etc should have an apprentice, either from the universities or from their home town. 5. Make cash available for manufacturers: We already have a large manufacturing base, but if cash is made available for them to scale up and enter new markets (abroad) as well as programs to teach them how to sell and earn outside of Nigeria, that will have the biggest impact. A bed frame made in someone village in the US can go for $2000 because we use real wood which is rare and considered a luxury in the US. An ordinary chair that we take for granted can sell for $300-$800 because again, we use real wood and hand crafting. Much of what we make at home would be considered luxury abroad because of how we make it and many of the people making shoes, furniture, and decor should know this |
