Igbos condemn teaching only Yoruba language in Lagos-owned schools, threaten to sue Sanwo-Olu’s govt “They should make it open: Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba – should be taught,” said the Igbo group’s leader. News Agency of Nigeria • February 14, 2025 Sanwo-Olu in Igbo attire and Ohanaeze leaders Sanwo-Olu in Igbo attire and Ohanaeze leaders The Igbo Women Assembly, a pressure group, has vowed to drag the Lagos government to court over its legislation for the exclusive teaching of the Yoruba language in state-owned schools. IWA national president Nneka Chimezie disclosed this at a news briefing in Umuahia on Thursday. IWA is affiliated with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation. Ms Chimezie said the group was worried over such legislation in a cosmopolitan state as Lagos. According to her, such a law is improper because the government knows Lagos harbours many other tribes. “They should make it open: Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba – should be taught,” she said. The IWA president, however, hailed the Yoruba for preserving their language. She called on the Igbo sons and daughters to join IWA in the campaign to stop the Igbo language from going into extinction. She said the group would organise an event to celebrate the Igbo Language on February 21 to commemorate the United Nation’s Mother Tongue Day. Ms Chimezie said the event, which would be held in Umuahia, would bring together many prominent sons and daughters of Igboland to discuss the way forward for the language. “We are coming together to talk about our language, rub minds to see how we can stop our language from going into extinction. “We are going to have a roundtable, after which we will come up with a communique,” the IWA president said. She called on Governor Charles Soludo to checkmate the activities of Agunechemba – a vigilance group and stop the extra-judicial killings in Anambra. “When they make arrests, they should hand the suspects over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution rather than killing them. “Agunechemba has no right to arrest and kill, and there have been too much blood-letting and killing of our youths in the South-East,” Ms Chimezie said. https://gazettengr.com/igbos-condemn-teaching-only-yoruba-language-in-lagos-owned-schools-threaten-to-sue-sanwo-olus-govt/ |

Lagos state government is trying to destroy the fabrics of unity. Why would Lagos state government think only Yoruba language is important in a multicultural state in Lagos? Igbos have strong presence in Lagos and has continued to contribute strongly to Lagos state economy. Igbo language must be taught in Lagos state schools, if there are teachers and interested students. |

StaffofOrayan:Yoruba can live as they want. Nobody is telling Yoruba how to live. We are telling Lagos state government, not Yoruba, how to be inclusive in the conduct of the affairs of government. |

EmeeNaka:LASG is just like any other state in SW. They are at liberty to do whatever they so wish Igbos, like Ijaws, Efiks, Hausas and others arent native to SW Nigeria, so why should only Igbos be added to the school curriculum and not the entire non-native languages? You see your logic now? A very weak one |

You dont even share boundaries with the region, why should they add Igbo to the curriculum and not add Hausa,Edo and the rest? Or should they add the entire 250 other Nigerian languages to the curriculum too? |

I think the rule is for government schools. Most government schools in SW have more than 90% yoruba population. So they can teach whatever they want. They are free to become so bigotic to teach all subjects in yoruba. It's not everything we should be complaining about. The idiots who are driving bigotry in Lagos get satisfaction only when people complain. Ignore them and they will look foolish to themselves Igbos should find private schools that teach Igbo and register their children. Or find ways to teach them igbo at home if they must go to government school. Silence is the best answer to those idiots |

EmeeNaka:Are you the one or Ohanaeze that make it multicultural via bilateral discussion with south west counterparts? Choose one of your own states too and make it multicultural, nobody will query you for doing so. South West can do what they like to any of their states so far it benefits them. Lagos is no more federal government property, state can do what they like that can benefit them. |

I can bet my life savings right now (which is all in dollars) that no Igbo women group in Lagos said this nonsense. Just another ethnic baiting nonsense from the APC govt to once again distract Nigerians from the more pressing issues of national security etc |

EmeeNaka:This is nothing but hypocrisy. Have you asked Enugu to include Igala in their curriculum? Ask Abia too to include Ibibio to be inclusive to their neighbors, many of whom dwell among them. Then we will see that you are sincere in this desire for inclusivity and not seeking, instead, to simply be a nuisance. Coming from a non-south westerner who is also a visitor in Lagos btw! |

What's the need of teaching only one language when we are one nation. Where is the unity? Even foreign countries don't teach only their indigeneous language in their country. After we will be screaming racism Yorubas are very insecure So for their mind if schools teach Igbo, lagos will turn Igbo land? Nawa o Many tribes are in lagos because it was the formal capital, so i don't see anything wrong if schools teach other languages. I blame Igbos that refuse to have sense. Keep investing in any place you find yourself. They shout one Nigeria and call you names because few Igbos are fighting for Biafra while they don't invest or settle outside their region. Who are the ones now practicing the one Nigeria? If you're Igbo and you have landed properties outside East or Abuja, you're a big fool and i will never pity you guys since you refuse to learn Stop buying landed properties where you're hated so that anytime they attack, you can forfeit your shop, come back and suya their brothers in the East without mercy. That's why i like my Onitsha people, only civil service takes us out of our land. No need to be moving around like wanderers buying landed properties and trading like mumu |

madridguy:If I am in Anambra State, I will be forced to learn Anambra in school. Similarly, if I am in Kano State, I will be forced to learn Kano in school. Now, no one is forcing your papa to come to Lagos State. The IPob people dealt with you severely in your region... then you came to Lagos State as a refugee in search of greener pastures, and the Lagosians welcomed you and the valuable issues you brought to the state... Now you are complaining about teaching Yoruba in a Yoruba state...not all....you are complaining about teaching Igbo...the irresponsibility of your southeast governors is what the southwest governors are shouldering...and you still have the guts to complain about services you did not pay for.... If you want to give your child an Igbo education, you should have built your own private state in your state instead of spreading your regional reproach and shame to our region. |

Bendeco02:How are Yorubas insecure? As of 2023, Two of 6 first ladies in the region are Non-Yorubas, truly insecure There are many non-Yoruba appointed into their civil service, very insecure Ondo state has an Igbo woman as the Lcda chairman of Ore/odigbo area, really insecure But in your region where Bianca from Enugu wanst allowed to contest in Anambra is more secure ![]() see the screenshot below and see that Abia state included on Yoruba and Hausa in their school curriculum....Hypocrites

EmeeNaka:you people are being wound up by devious politicians. Lagos and the SW states have always had Yoruba as compulsory language same as Igbo would be in the SE and Hausa in the North. It has always been that way without controversy until you people where whipped up like puppies by this meaningless move. It has always been there and has never caused any problems. These politicians just use the ethnic tones to cause mayhem |

When they say Lagos is a cosmopolitan or multicultural state what they are trying to tell you is that Lagos is a no man's land. Imagine having sleepless night about Lagos in far away east. We don't even share a border with these people. If you don't like Lagos teaching Yoruba in its schools, Nigeria has 35 other states and no one is holding anyone in Lagos. Move out and stop whining. |
