Igbos condemn teaching only Yoruba language in Lagos-owned schools, threaten to sue Sanwo-Olu’s govt

The Igbo Women Assembly, a pressure group, has vowed to drag the Lagos government to court over its legislation for the exclusive teaching of the Yoruba language in state-owned schools.

IWA national president Nneka Chimezie disclosed this at a news briefing in Umuahia on Thursday.

IWA is affiliated with Ohanaeze Ndigbo, an apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

Ms Chimezie said the group was worried over such legislation in a cosmopolitan state as Lagos.

According to her, such a law is improper because the government knows Lagos harbours many other tribes.

“They should make it open: Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba – should be taught,” she said.

The IWA president, however, hailed the Yoruba for preserving their language.

She called on the Igbo sons and daughters to join IWA in the campaign to stop the Igbo language from going into extinction.

She said the group would organise an event to celebrate the Igbo Language on February 21 to commemorate the United Nation’s Mother Tongue Day.

Ms Chimezie said the event, which would be held in Umuahia, would bring together many prominent sons and daughters of Igboland to discuss the way forward for the language.

“We are coming together to talk about our language, rub minds to see how we can stop our language from going into extinction.

“We are going to have a roundtable, after which we will come up with a communique,” the IWA president said.

She called on Governor Charles Soludo to checkmate the activities of Agunechemba – a vigilance group and stop the extra-judicial killings in Anambra.

“When they make arrests, they should hand the suspects over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution rather than killing them.

“Agunechemba has no right to arrest and kill, and there have been too much blood-letting and killing of our youths in the South-East,” Ms Chimezie said.

Igbos, like Ijaws, Efiks, Hausas and others arent native to SW Nigeria, so why should only Igbos be added to the school curriculum and not the entire non-native languages?

Check your history books, have you defeated them before? Your "no-go-area boundary" is Ore, you can't even reach Lagos talkless of talking about defeating them in Lagos

I think the rule is for government schools. Most government schools in SW have more than 90% yoruba population. So they can teach whatever they want. They are free to become so bigotic to teach all subjects in yoruba.

Are you the one or Ohanaeze that make it multicultural via bilateral discussion with south west counterparts? Choose one of your own states too and make it multicultural, nobody will query you for doing so. South West can do what they like to any of their states so far it benefits them. Lagos is no more federal government property, state can do what they like that can benefit them.

This is nothing but hypocrisy. Have you asked Enugu to include Igala in their curriculum? Ask Abia too to include Ibibio to be inclusive to their neighbors, many of whom dwell among them. If I am in Anambra State, I will be forced to learn Anambra in school. Similarly, if I am in Kano State, I will be forced to learn Kano in school. Now, no one is forcing your papa to come to Lagos State. The IPob people dealt with you severely in your region... then you came to Lagos State as a refugee in search of greener pastures, and the Lagosians welcomed you and the valuable issues you brought to the state...

As of 2023, Two of 6 first ladies in the region are Non-Yorubas, truly insecure
There are many non-Yoruba appointed into their civil service, very insecure

Ondo state has an Igbo woman as the Lcda chairman of Ore/odigbo area, really insecure

But in your region where Bianca from Enugu wanst allowed to contest in Anambra is more secure

you people are being wound up by devious politicians. Lagos and the SW states have always had Yoruba as compulsory language same as Igbo would be in the SE and Hausa in the North. It has always been that way without controversy until you people where whipped up like puppies by this meaningless move. It has always been there and has never caused any problems.
